~ The Bank Manager's most famous quote. |
The Bank Manager is a minor character in the 2008 film The Dark Knight, the second installment of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy. He was a corrupt bank manager working for the Gotham City Mob.
He was portrayed by William Fichtner, who also played Roger van Zant in Heat, Butch Cavendish in The Lone Ranger, The Accountant in Drive Angry and Eric Sacks in the 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, and also voiced Ken Rosenberg in the Grand Theft Auto series.
History[]
When the Joker and his gang of thugs arrive to rob the bank, he is surprised but remains collected. He discreetly produces a shotgun and manages to kill Chuckles with a shotgun blast to the back before he makes his way through the lobby, taking shots at Grumpy and the Joker (under the alias "Bozo") who ducks behind counters. In his scheme to kill off his men for all their collected cash, the Joker tricks Grumpy into believing that the manager has run out of ammo. When Grumpy stands to kill the manager he is grazed by buckshot. With the manager's shotgun soon becoming empty, the Joker sprang up and shoots him in the legs. Shortly before the Joker leaves, the Manager chastises him about how he lacks honor, even by criminal standards and questions what he believes in. The Joker then shoves a canister into the manager's mouth and reveals his true identity whilst stating "I believe whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you - stranger". As the Joker drove off with the money and the manager's shotgun, a string attached to the Joker yanked the safety pin out of the canister in the manager's mouth. Instead of exploding, it releases fumes of an unknown nature before the manager groans as his head drops.
Personality[]
The Bank Manager was an individual who was able to keep a level-head during a violent bank robbery but showed a propensity for extreme anger as seen when he stormed the Joker and Grumpy as well as after being shot in the legs.

Trivia[]
- The character of the Bank Manager is believed to be a direct homage to the classic 1995 action film Heat which Christopher Nolan is a fan of. In that movie, the secondary antagonist is a bank manager named Roger van Zant and was played by William Fitchner.
- Though working for the mob makes him a villain as he stores their money, the Bank Manager doesn't do anything really villainous during his screentime; just the opposite, he defends his fellow bank employees with his shotgun and faces the Joker and his thugs, though it's most likely he did that to prevent them from escaping with the mob's money.
