Banka Yobou, also known as the Boy with Goggles, is a minor antagonist of the A Certain Magical Index franchise.
He is an Academy City student and Level 4 Esper whose also an agent of SCHOOL, an organization from the Dark Side of Academy City. He was the first to be killed in action during the Battle Royale Arc.
He was voiced by Yūya Hirose in Japanese and by Blake McNamara in English.
Appearance[]
Banka is a young man with short, spikey black hair and black eyes. He is shown to either wear a puffy vest over his shirt or a plain flannel shirt. He's always seen in action with a pair of metallic goggles that is placed over his head like the rings of Saturn, powered with a machine on his back.
Personality[]
As a Level 4 esper, Banka is shown to be extremely arrogant and overconfident in his abilities, believing himself to be equal to a Level 5 esper. In the past, Banka tried to defeat Teitoku Kakine in a fight to earn the title of Level 5, as he was confident his versatile and powerful ability made him an equal to them. He was soundly beaten and now he tends to get nauseous whenever he sees Kakine angry. Moreover, Banka is also very merciless, showing no qualms with killing Management, as SCHOOL saw him as a liability to their plans.
However, despite this, Banka is seemingly quite laidback at times, as shown when he laughed at the SCHOOL Laison's joke about Kakine's Dark Matter wings.
Biography[]
Banka's full background is largely unknown, however, what is known is that he became unsatisfied with his rank as a Level 4 esper, as he thought his powers were strong enough to rival a Level 5. Aiming to become a Level 5, he tried to overthrow Teitoku Kakine, the #2. Yobou was defeated, but SCHOOL somehow won him over and he joined the organization.

Psychokinesis: Yobou is a Level 4 Psychokinesist, capable of performing various phenomena. Psychokinesis is a versatile esper power which allows the user to physically influence objects with their mind, similar to Telekinesis but with a wider range of applications. Yobou has been shown to be strong enough to tear through a van in half with his power and easily crush a human's head and hands by moving his fingers as if swiping a card. He can also easily carry an adult with one hand. Additionally, besides being able to interface with computers to extract and analyze data, his special trademark goggles can amplify his esper power and give him more applications such as creating fire, turning invisible, erasing noise and sound, manipulating electronics, etc.
