Biography[]

Original Timeline[]

Mortal Kombat II[]

Baraka led the attack on the Shaolin Temple in the Earthrealm, which caused Liu Kang to seek vengeance and journey into Outworld, all according to Shao Kahn's plan. He teamed up with Mileena in an attempt to take down Shao Kahn, but they failed in the attempt. Baraka was sent to the lowlands of Outworld, but escaped after Kahn was defeated during the events of Mortal Kombat 3, left to wander the realms.

Mortal Kombat 4[]

Quan Chi found Baraka wandering through Edenia and offered him a chance to rule the realms at his side, if he fought for Shinnok. The Tarkatan agreed due to his need for combat, but planned to betray his masters yet again. However Shinnok was defeated before he got the chance to.

In his non canon ending, Barka aided Quan Chi in killing Shinnok, but considered the sorcerer a madman for wishing to rule a dead Realm. While he seemingly killed Quan Chi, this turned out to be a copy, and he was killed by the real Quan Chi.

Mortal Kombat: Deception[]

Baraka2

Baraka in Mortal Kombat Deception.

As seen in the Konquest Mode, Baraka battled the rogue demon Ashrah, whom had slain many of Shao Kahn's Netherrealm allies. While she defeated him Baraka was left alive due to being only a bartial demon. Later, while attacking the walled city of Li Chen and being fought off by Hotaru's Seidan Guard, Baraka and his Tarkatans encountered Shujinko, who was the one who warned the city. Baraka was especially enraged at Shujinko's treachery and subsequent brazenness, and agreed to kombat the adventurer, confidently believing he could kill him. In the end however, Shujinko beat him, much to his shock, and Baraka was forced to teach him his fighting style in return.

During the events of the main game, Baraka found a new master, this time the resurrected Onaga, whom he had great faith in. The Tarkatan freed Mileena and recruited her to the Dragon King's side to pose as Kitana so as to misdirect Edenia's forces against Baraka's raiding forces, keeping them away from Onaga. But when Mileena gave Bo Rai Cho control of Edenia's army, many of the Tarkata were defeated, angering Baraka. When the two set up a meeting in the Beetle's Lair, the Tarkatan sent another of his race in his place, since he had grown suspicious of her. This proved to be an excellent decision since Mileena killed the Tarkatan in an attempt to get rid of Baraka.

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon[]

In the final battle of Armageddon, Baraka joined the Forces of Darkness to fight against Kung Lao once again. In his ending, Baraka defeated Blaze and gained godlike power. The Tarkatan then decided to be his own master and ordered Shao Kahn and Onaga to bow before him or die. They responded by attacking him, only to be impaled on Baraka's armblades, which grew to twice their normal size. Now ruler of Outworld, the Tarkatan made Mileena an offer to be his queen. She chose wisely, implying that she agreed.

As seen in the prologue of Mortal Kombat 9, Baraka seems to have killed Sub-Zero, as her arm was seen embedded in the Lin Kuei, but the Tarkatan was eventually been killed by Kung Lao, having been sliced in half by his hat.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe[]

Barakadc

Baraka as he appears in MK vs DC.

After the merger began, Baraka attacked Sonya at the Shaolin Temple, but was defeated. He then appeared as one of Quan Chi's allies, along with Shang Tsung after Scorpion managed to track down Kitana.

The Netherrealm sorcerer sent Baraka, Scorpion, and Shang to take out Captain Marvel, but they were defeated. Afterwards he and the other two appeared at Raiden's Sky Temple as Quan Chi freed Kitana from the rage. Baraka then joined forces with the other Mortal Kombat fighters so as to defeat Dark Kahn. Upon arriving, Baraka was surprised by what Outworld has become, since it had fused with Apokolips.

In his ending, the rage dissipated in all the inhabitants of the realms, except for the Tarkata. The rage brought them to a whole new level of bloodlust and they stormed through the realms, dominating all and marking their foreheads with the blood of their enemies.

Alternate Timeline[]

Main article: Baraka (2nd Timeline)

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught[]

to be added

New Era[]

Mortal Kombat 1[]

In the New Era created by Fire God Liu Kang, Tarkatans are not their own species. Baraka was instead born an Edenian, before becoming infected by the Tarkat plague, which mutated and disfigured him into a monster. Becoming incredibly ill, Baraka was banished from Outworld's society. He would outlive his wife and daughter, losing them to the disease. Despite his tragedies, this Baraka was a heroic figure, eventually allying with the Forces of Light.

That being said, alternate versions of Baraka feature as antagonists, such as one from Titan Shang Tsung's New Era, who joins his master in attacking Liu Kang's Hourglass. He fought the Fire God and the Titan Kitana together with Reptile, but they were defeated by the two. During the subsequent Battle of Armageddon, several versions of Baraka were aligned with the Forces of Darkness. Another alternate Baraka from Titan Havik's timeline features in Khaos Reigns, battling Sektor and Lt Colonel Johnny Cage along with Reptile and Ermac.

Other Media[]

Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge[]

Baraka appears in the movie Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge as a minor antagonist. He is briefly seen in the movie fighting Johnny Cage when the tournament begins. He is eventually killed when the building he is in collapses.

Personality[]

Baraka was introduced as a mean, ruthless, unforgiving, unpredictable and destructive warrior in service of Shao Kahn before later games revealed his more honorable side. He belongs to a race of nomadic mutants, later revealed in Mortal Kombat: Deception to be called Tarkata, a crossbreed between vile and unpleasant Netherrealm demons and denizens of Outworld, apparently populating the vast wastelands of Outworld. Like most members of his race, Baraka possesses long blades extending from his forearms. Although he has had numerous incursions with the Earthrealm warriors, he doesn't appear to have any particular rivalry or hatred towards Earth or its inhabitants. As a loyal and nonviolent warrior, he fights for those whom he calls "master".

Mortal Kombat 11 reveals that Baraka is among the least corrupt of Shao Kahn's followers. Although still ruthless, most of his actions stem from caring about his race. He also shows compassion to some of his enemies, outright admitting to Jade that he felt sorry for those enslaved by Quan Chi. Despite serving Kronika, he eventually realized that Kotal and the rest of the Earthrealmers were right about Shao Kahn's uncaring nature towards the people of Outworld and turned against him. He even joined them in the final battle against Kronika and her remaining forces.

~ Baraka to Shujinko after he brought reinforcements to
I am of the Tarkata, a savage race of nomadic warriors bred from denizens of Outworld and demons of the Netherrealm. My kind have served many masters: Shao Kahn, Shang Tsung, Quan Chi... All have fallen. All have been weak. But our new master is strong! Invincible! We will slay all who oppose him! We will follow him to gory victory! ONAGA! He has ordered us to ravage Outworld in order to distract the foolish allies and give him time to complete his plans. Mileena poses as Princess Kitana to confuse and misdirect the enemies of the Dragon King. She lies to them and tells them to attack our raiding parties. But our Lord will be nowhere near us. We draw their armies away from him. When my master's will is done, they will all be consumed!

Kronika's power was mine, mine to share with the tribe! In the new timeline I built, Tarkatans would be slaves no more. We would rule. We easily took Edenia, then Outworld and the Netherrealm. Last we challenged Earthrealm in Mortal Kombat. Within a thousand years, all realms fell to Tarkatan blade... And we have not run out of meat since! AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
~ Baraka's ending in MK11
I smell weakness!
