Baramanda is the main antagonist of the 2005 US-South Korean animated film Ark.

He was voiced by Trevor Devall, who also played Emperor Palpatine in the LEGO Star Wars TV specials and Atticus Moon in Big Time Movie.

Biography[]

Baramanda is the vizier of Empress Cathebel, the ruler of the planet Alcyeon. She convokes him to have a report about the Ark. The Ark is a a gigantic spaceship city that should allow the inhabitants of the Alcyeon to escape this planet. Having hired the best scientist of the planet Dr. Anders to work in the Ark, he assures the ruler that they work hard to make the machine work. They even run another mobility test this day. Faced with criticism from the Empress because of the slowness of the project coupled with the critical condition of Alcyceon, he shows him a hologram taken by a skirmish from the rebels.

Sent by Cathebel, he goes to Commander Jallak's house to inform him he is convoked in the palace. He notices Amarinth, Jallak's adopted daughter, and says she is beautiful. In the palace, he shows him the data recuperated. He tells him he must go in a mission but the Commander refuses because he must watch over his daughter. The vizier offers him to check up on here but Jallak refuses and resigns to go on the mission.

Baramanda is then seen interrogating a prisoner after having killed another. He asks him where is the body of the High Priestess Amiel's body, to be answered she is just a legend. Indeed, the body is researched because she was the creator of the Ark and that she possesses the power to start it. Assuming he will reveal nothing, he tells the story about the worms he keeps as pets and lauches one of them on the captive. His life is drained.

The data shown earlier is revealed to be Amiel's body. Baramanda, with the Empress and all the elite are here to assist the starting of the Ark. But the attempt fails, to the Empress's dismay. However, Higgins, Dr. Anders's assistant, tells that Amiel supposedly has a daughter according to a legend. Baramanda even assures that the Ceveans, the specie of Amiel, are known to put their children in hibernation' pods. This suggests that Amiel's daughter still could exist. Baramanda also suggests to examine the blood samples of all the female in the city of the Sterrians, the ruling civilization, because he has heard that some has Ceyeans as both house servants and as adopted children. They do and the person corresponding is revealed to be Amarinth. Enjoying the surprise, Baramanda also says he investigated the recording files of Jallak and that he discovered his loyalty is not as good as it must be. Jallak is put under arrest. Baramanda then goes for Amandel with his guards. He announces her the new. Taking her away, he is stopped by Rogan, a Ceyean rebel who kills the two guards. Baramanda then holds Amandel to pretend he threatens her life but Rogan says he will not kill her because he needs her. The vizier releases her and throws some of his pets to them.

Baramanda makes Amandel a wanted person by the city authorities. He then organizes the execution of Commander Jallak for his treason. But Amandel offers herself to Baramanda in exchange of her father's release. The vizier accepts. They go to the Ark with Amarinth. She believes the objectif is to activate the Ark. However, once entered into the ship, Baramanda orders to close all the possibles entrances to the core and to kill the slaves and the Commander Jallak as well despite having promised to spare his life. He makes Amarinth fall asleep and takes her to Dr. Anders' quarters. He reveals he plans to kill her by draining her blood and transferring it into himself. Dr. Anders highly protests and because of this, Baramanda asks Higgins if he knows how the system works. He answers positively and Baramanda shoots Dr. Anders. He then puts his worms-pets on Amarinth and they begin to suck her blood to transfer it to Baramanda. Jallak irrupts and offers to the treacherous vizier to let Amarinth and in exchange, he will let him live banished to the Watelands, the region of the Ceyeans. Baramanda refuses the deal and taunts the ex-Commander by saying he is just a father who watches his daughter die. In the same time, Amiel, localized in the Ark's core, awakens and throws green rays to Baramanda who falls to the ground unconscious. But after a certain time, he wakes up with a gaunt-like body. He goes to merge with the core of the Ark and when Higgins begs him to not do so because it will kill everybody, Baramanda turns around and grins wickedly.

After his fusion, he takes control of the gigantic ship and delivers it of its foundations, killing everyone nearby. On her side, Amarinth learns that her mother has constructed another ship, the Ark of York. She fuses with this Ark and begins to fight against the other controlled by Baramanda. The evil former vizier has the upper hand on Amarinth. Fortunately, Commander Jallak and his friend, having stayed of the Ark where Baramanda is, make a heroic sacrifice by putting a bomb on the Ark's reactor. This causes a great explosion who makes Baramanda's body distintegrate.

Personality[]

Due to his high position, Baramanda helds great powers in the city of Sterrians. He is very manipulative and is seen to have influence on Empress Cathebel' decisions. As the time goes on, his true self begins to shows itself little by little. In fact, he is a horrible psychopath who holds no regard for his people and for life in general except for his own. For unknown reasons, he seeks immortality for himself and is perfectly fine with condemning all Acycleon' peoples to death if it is what it takes to have his immortality. This makes him an egotist of the worst kind. He is also sadistic, enjoying to slowly torture and kill prisoners with his worms-pets.

Despite all this, he is able to adopt a polite manner when it suits him. He does this in the beginning with everybody he works with or encounters, even with his prisoners. Nevertheless, when his plan is revealed, he immediately drops the act and acts exactly as the monster he is. To put it simply, he is completely evil without a single redeeming quality.
