~ Barem reveals his true disdain of Denji while strangling Nayuta.

Barem Bridge, also known as Flamethrower Man, is a major antagonist in the Chainsaw Man franchise, specifically being a minor antagonist in Part 1: The Public Safety Saga and the secondary antagonist of Part 2: The Academy Saga.

He is an unhinged and fanatical second-in-command of the Chainsaw Man Church, who is obsessed with Makima and has a personal hatred towards Denji for killing her. As a result, he serves as the arch-enemy of Denji. Having merged with the Flamethrower Devil, Barem became a hybrid, capable of turning into a flamethrower, using his powers to get his vengeance on Denji, targeting him and everyone he loves.

Appearance[]

Barem is a tall and muscular man with long hair. When transforming into Flamethrower Man, his head turns into the cylinders used for flamethrowers.

Personality[]

Initially, little was known about Barem's personality as he only appeared in Part 1 when under Makima's control, but maintained hints of his original personality when conversing with Makima about Pochita being supposedly weaker than he was reputed as. When he reappears in Part 2, however, Barem is revealed to be an openly unhinged individual who sees little value in human life. He seems to have something of a fanatical obsession with Chainsaw Man, but this obsession doesn't seem to extend to Denji himself, with Barem rather cruelly mocking him by threatening to kill Asa Mitaka to his face (Which, as it's later shown, he intended to do to begin with). As such Barem seems enamored with the idea of Chainsaw Man, but doesn't actually care about the real person.

In spite of his unhinged behavior, Barem is shown to be genuinely intelligent, distracting Public Safety by setting up a false-flag terrorist attack in order to distract them while his organization turns 350,000 people across the globe into devils using a contract with the Fire Devil. Furthermore, while Barem is extremely callous, he does seem to be truthful in his intention to save humanity by empowering both Chainsaw Man and the War Devil to kill the Death Devil.

Biography[]

Background[]

During some unknown time in the past, Barem merged with the Flamethrower Devil becoming a hybrid. Sometime later, Makima had him placed under her control along with the other hybrids, which Barem accepted for unknown reasons.

Control Devil Arc[]

After Pochita proved unwilling to follow Makima's will, she responded by summoning all the Hybrids under her command. While the other Hybrids professed their love for Makima, he showed mere amusement at their expressions.

After Makima ordered the Hybrids to attack Pochita, Barem responded by burning down a building where Pochita temporarily took shelter in, while gleefully laughing. Barem is soon defeated by him alongside the other Hybrids.

Chainsaw Man Church Arc[]

Barem is reintroduced in 1999 as second in command of the Chainsaw Man Church where he meets Denji after the latter was brought there by Miri Sugo in an effort to recruit him. Barem amicably talks with him for a bit, before threatening to kill Asa Mitaka in order to force Denji to turn into Chainsaw Man. Horrified, Denji walks away from the Church, with Barem cheerfully telling him to enjoy his normal life while he still could.

Later on, Barem is seen talking to the other hybrids about their plans to commit a terrorist attack, ostensibly to force Denji into becoming Chainsaw Man again. Barem makes it clear that it doesn't matter how many people they kill tomorrow, as God will forgive them either way. The next day, Barem interrupts a conversation between Denji and Fumiko Mifune, with Barem talking about how he's a "Chainsaw Man fan" and wants to watch Chainsaw Man constantly struggling and suffering for his entertainment. He then implicitly threatening the two of them by saying that the hybrids are going to start killing civilians in a few minutes. However, Miri, whip, and Spear are immediately stopped by Quanxi, who had since joined up with Public Safety.

Barem remains relaxing on the park bench while Public Safety comes in to arrest him. Barem makes no effort to resist, instead only asking that they wait a few minutes so he can sing Kumbaya while watching the sunset. It is then that Barem's true motivation with the terrorist attack becomes clear: to distract Public Safety while the Chainsaw Man Church turns 350,000 of its members into devils across the world. With the entire city devolving into violent, bloody chaos, Barem casually walks away while explaining how he and "Fami" (Death) contracted with the Fire Devil to use their church's members as fodder to turn into devils resembling Chainsaw Man. According to him, he and Fami are doing this so that they can power up both the War Devil and Chainsaw Man in order to kill Great the King of Terror, the Death Devil, and save humanity.

Barem then orders chainsaw turned civilians to kill Nayuta, though Quanxi intervenes, cutting them down and taking Denji, Nayuta, and Fumiko to safety.

Barem and the weapon devils regroup at Denji's apartment and burns it down, killing Meowy and his dogs inside. When Denji arrives at the scene Barem trips to and mocks him Denji, however Fumiko and Public Safety begin to shoot him down.

Nayuta attempts to control Barem and force him to kill himself to no avail. While strangling her he reveals her current control ability does not work him likely due to his genuine loyalty to Makima, blaming Denji for her death and ruining her vision of peace, further justyfying his arson attack as flames of punishment for Makima's demise.

While Denji is taken away to safety, Barem attempts to shoot Nayuta, though changes tactics when the he realizes its out of ammo. Barem pretends Nayuta is forcing him to shoot himself and begs the mob to kill her as they draw closer toward them.

Aging Devil Arc[]

Within a week Barem reappears at a Sushi restaurant greeting Denji, claiming he has information on Nayuta's whereabouts and will give them if he kills the public safety agents outside the restaurant. However while ordering Denji to sit down and eat he reveals the "main dish" is Nayuta's decapitated head, revealing he seemingly had her killed by the angry mob. Furious, Denji immediately decapitates Barem and allows Pochita to take over.

Current Arc[]

Barem returns in July at Fourth East High, acting on a plan to retrigger Pochita once again, seemingly being behind the explosion that engulfed both Denji and Hirofumi Yoshida. Barem, wielding a flame thrower proceeds to torch Yoshida to a crisp infront of Denji, killing him for good before declaring they both "drew the short straw". Broken and furious, Denji cracks and Pochita takes over, immediately devouring Barem. Barem protests that Pochita is supposed to kill then eat him but is ignored and viciously eaten alive whole, erasing him from existence.
