~ Barem reveals his true disdain of Denji while strangling Nayuta. |
Barem Bridge, also known as Flamethrower Man is a major antagonist in the manga series Chainsaw Man, serving as a minor antagonist in the Control Devil Arc, the main antagonist of the Chainsaw Man Church Arc and a supporting antagonist in the Current Arc. Having merged with the Flamethrower Devil, Barem became a Hybrid, capable of turning into a flamethrower.
Appearance[]
Barem is a tall and muscular man with long hair. When transforming into Flamethrower Man, his head turns into the cylinders used for flamethrowers.
Personality[]
Initially, little was known about Barem's personality as he only appeared in Part 1 when under Makima's control, but maintained hints of his original personality when conversing with Makima about Pochita being supposedly weaker than he was reputed as. When he reappears in Part 2, however, Barem is revealed to be an openly unhinged individual who sees little value in human life. He seems to have something of a fanatical obsession with Chainsaw Man, but this obsession doesn't seem to extend to Denji himself, with Barem rather cruelly mocking him by threatening to kill Asa Mitaka to his face (Which, as it's later shown, he intended to do to begin with). As such Barem seems enamored with the idea of Chainsaw Man, but doesn't actually care about the real person.
In spite of his unhinged behavior, Barem is shown to be genuinely intelligent, distracting Public Safety by setting up a false-flag terrorist attack in order to distract them while his organization turns 350,000 people across the globe into devils using a contract with the Fire Devil. Furthermore, while Barem is extremely callous, he does seem to be truthful in his intention to save humanity by empowering both Chainsaw Man and the War Devil to kill the Death Devil.
Biography[]
Background[]
During some unknown time in the past, Barem merged with the Flamethrower Devil. Sometime later, Makima had him as a contact, which Barem accepted for some reasons.
Control Devil Arc[]
After Pochita proved unwilling to follow Makima's will, she responded by summoning all the Hybrids under her command. While the other Hybrids professed their love for Makima, he showed mere amusement at their expressions.
After Makima ordered the Hybrids to attack Pochita, Barem responded by burning down a building where Pochita temporarily took shelter in, while gleefully laughing. Barem is soon defeated by him alongside the other Hybrids.
Chainsaw Man Church Arc[]
Barem is reintroduced in the Chainsaw Man Church arc when he meets Denji after the latter was brought there by Miri Sugo in an effort to recruit him. Barem amicably talks with him for a bit, before threatening to kill Asa Mitaka in order to force Denji to turn into Chainsaw Man. Horrified, Denji walks away from the Church, with Barem cheerfully telling him to enjoy his normal life while he still could.
Later on, Barem is seen talking to the other hybrids about their plans to commit a terrorist attack, ostensibly to force Denji into becoming Chainsaw Man again. Barem makes it clear that it doesn't matter how many people they kill tomorrow, as God will forgive them either way. The next day, Barem interrupts a conversation between Denji and Fumiko, with Barem talking about how he's a "Chainsaw Man fan" and wants to watch Chainaw Man constantly struggling and suffering for his entertainment. He then implicitly threatening the two of them by saying that the hybrids are going to start killing civilians in a few minutes. However, Miri, Whip, and Spear are immediately stopped by Quanxi, who had since joined up with Public Safety.
Barem remains relaxing on the park bench while Public Safety comes in to arrest him. Barem makes no effort to resist, instead only asking that they wait a few minutes so he can sing Kumbaya while watching the sunset. It is then that Barem's true motivation with the terrorist attack becomes clear: to distract Public Safety while the Chainsaw Man Church turns 350,000 of its members into devils across the world. With the entire city devolving into violent, bloody chaos, Barem casually walks away while explaining how he and Fami contracted with the Fire Devil to use their church's members as fodder to turn into devils resembling Chainsaw Man. According to him, he and Fami are doing this so that they can power up both the War Devil and Chainsaw Man in order to kill Great the King of Terror, the Death Devil, and save humanity.
