Baron Karl Amadeus Mordo is the secondary antagonist of the animated superhero movie, Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme. He is a former disciple of the Ancient One who became corrupted by the dark lord Dormammu after being turned away as the new Sorcerer Supreme in favor of Stephen Strange.
He was voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson, who also voiced the Joker in The Batman, Temutai in Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, Trigon in Teen Titans, Trigon's 2013 incarnation in Teen Titans Go!, Carlton Duquesne in Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman, Shadow King in Wolverine and the X-Men, Black Manta and Despero in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Tombstone in The Spectacular Spider-Man, Floronic Man in Batman and Harley Quinn, Ian the Gator in The Princess and the Frog, Prince John in House of Mouse, Black Samurai in Scooby-Doo! and the Samurai Sword, and Deebo in Friday: The Animated Series.
Personality[]
Although a good fighter and fierce warrior, Mordo is pompous and not a particularly skilled sorcerer. His fellow sorcerers regard him with a mocking contempt due to him seeing himself as leader and his recklessness and lack of concern about their well being. He believes that he will be chosen as the Sorcerer Supreme, but the Ancient One denied it, saying that he never even contemplated him for the position (particularly for his recklessness that killed many of his friends when fighting Chinous) and feels Stephen Strange is more worthy in such position for unlike Mordo he does not seek it and understands the value of life.
History[]
Mordo and his fellow sorcerers are shown pursuing demonic beasts through downtown New York. Mordo however, is more concerned with killing the monsters than in actually protecting innocent civilians. He is present at the Ancient One's side when Stephen Strange arrives at Kamutage in search of a way to heal his hands.
Later, Mordo is called upon by the Ancient One to protect the Sanctum Sanctorum from a couple of reptilian monsters called Chinous. He advises Mordo to kill the creatures one at a time to avoid collateral damage. However, the arrogant Mordo disobeys and leads two separate teams to take them on. As a result, several of the weaker students are killed before the beasts are defeated.
As the Ancient One mourns the loss of his disciples, he scolds Mordo for his disobedience and tells him that he will never inherit the title of Sorcerer Supreme. The Ancient One then names Strange as his heir apparent and tasks Mordo with training Strange in the art of combat, much to Mordo's disapproval.
Strange and Mordo face off in a training session. Mordo's jealousy towards strange gets the better of him, escalating the mock-fight into a deadly contest of skills. During the fight, Strange whom just learned how to use magic instinctively absorbs Mordo's spell and deflects the energy back towards him knocking Mordo back. Mordo enraged lunges at Strange with two axes to kill him, but Wong intervenes and tells Strange that he will be taking over his training. A dejected Mordo leaves, now with true hatred in his eyes for Strange.
Humiliated, Mordo turns to the dark god Dormammu, offering to help him in his plan and Dormammu accepts his assistance. The traitorous Mordo betrays his fellow sorcerers and kills the Ancient One.
Although he helps Dormammu succeed in entering the real world, Mordo is confronted again by Strange who once again effortlessly defeats him. Mordo howls in rage at his inability to defeat Strange before Dormammu, probably feeling embarrassed for Mordo at this point, devours him, inadvertently avenging the Ancient One's death.
