Biography[]
A former student of the Ancient One, he attempted to overthrow him. However, Stephen Strange discovered his plan and attempted to warn the Ancient One, but Mordo used a spell to silence him. Fortunately, the Ancient One already knew of Mordo's plan and effortlessly stopped it, banishing Mordo from his tutelage and taking Strange on as his apprentice. Mordo went onto become high priest of the Dread Dormammu whom he seeks to release from the Dark Dimension. He controls a cult of worshipers, whom he keeps under his control by casting illusions that delude them into believing that they are being reunited with loved ones-holding them at his lair, referred to as the Center for Reunification.
Mordo pursues the powerful Wand of Watoomb, brainwashing Mary-Jane Watson into becoming a member of his cult, and showing her visions of her father. When Peter Parker comes to rescue her, Mordo brainwashes him by showing him visions of his deceased parents. He then sends his puppets, including Peter to raid Strange's temple and bring him the Wand of Watoomb. Using his spider powers, Spider-Man overwhelms Dr. Strange and his assistant Woo with the help of the other cultists. Mary-Jane makes off with the Wand but Strange captures Spider-Man and releases him from Mordo's mind-control.
They then go to Mordo's temple where he is using the Wand in a ritual to open a portal to the Dark Dimension. Spider-Man gets the Wand off Mordo whilst Woo fights off the cultists. Mordo attacks Strange but proves no match for him. He pleads with Dormammu for help and Dormammu possesses his servant from beyond the portal to use his powers against Strange. Spider-Man jumps through the portal to fight Dormammu and is joined by Strange. They retrieve the Wand from Dormammu and escape, by which time Mordo has fled.
However, Mordo would not give up in bringing his master into Earth. Under Dormammu’s orders, Mordo started a technology company under the name of Ardon Broom (an anagram for Baron Mordo) which would supply Stark Industries with a device called the Inter-Dimensional Probe. This technology could open portals to other dimensions, which could in turn bring Dormammu to Earth. He then broke into Stark Industries and used a computer to bring the John Jameson Probe back to Earth. His reason for doing was because the probe had the Venom symbiote attached to it, back when Spider-Man trapped it there before it went into space. Mordo’s plan was to bring the symbiote back to Eddie Brock so he could bond with it, and retrieve the Inter-Dimensional Probe from Stark Industries.
The plan is a success and the probe lands in a park, where the Venom symbiote (as well as its offspring, the Carnage symbiote) attacks a young couple who witness its landing. Mordo uses his power of astral projection to speak with Eddie Brock at the Ravencroft Institute for the Criminally Insane, where he informs Brock that he can have the chance to bond with the symbiote again, in exchange for vowing permanent service to Dormammu. Brock agrees.
Mordo uses his powers to hypnotize the young woman who witnessed the probe’s landing to bond with the Venom symbiote, and visit Eddie at the Asylum. The symbiote then bonds with Eddie and he is now Venom again. He escapes the Asylum and speaks with Dormammu in Mordo's lair. The demon tells Eddie how they were able to get the symbiote back, and orders him to get the Inter-Dimensional Probe.
Once Mordo arrives at Stark Industries, he witnesses Venom’s struggle to get the probe back as he is fighting Spider-Man and War Machine. Worried about Venom possibly failing, Dormammu informs him about Venom’s spawn, Carnage, much to Mordo’s surprise. Realizing that the symbiote must bond with someone as “fanatical” as Brock, Mordor remembers his conversation with Eddie in his cell, in which Cletus Kasady (who was in the cell next to Eddie) begged Mordo for the symbiote instead.
Mordo once again uses powers to hypnotize the young woman’s boyfriend into bonding with the Carnage symbiote. The man breaks into the Institute and arrives at Kasady’s cell. Mordo uses his astral form to make the same deal with Kasady that he had Brock, in which he would have to serve Doromammu forever in exchange for the symbiote. Kasady agrees and bonds with Carnage. He then escapes from his cell and arrives at Stark Industries to retrieve the Probe.
Once Carnage arrives to help Venom go against Spider-Man and War Machine, the two engage in a fight over who kills Spider-Man, and Mordo has to break them up. They take the Probe and bring it to Mordo’s lair. Venom and Carnage attempt to kill each other once last time, but are interrupted by Dormammu, who tells them that he needs an equal amount of life force to replace himself once he leaves his dimension. Venom departs due to feeling he has repaid his debt. Carnage tries to drag Venom back, but is stopped by Dormammu who tells him he no longer needs Venom now that he has him. Dormmanu then gives Carnage the power to drain souls from others, so he may put those souls into a urn that will be used to replace him in his dimension.
Carnage manages to drain a few people and makes the same attempt on Spider-Man, but to no avail. Mordo uses his astral form to inform Carnage that he must be drained of the souls he consumed in order to drain more. Therefore Carnage throws Spider-Man aside and returns to the lair. After he drains the souls into the urn, Mordo tells him he needs more. Carnage goes back to New York City and follows through with his task, where he drains life from Lieutenant Terri Lee, as well as Venom’s love interest, Dr. Ashley Kafka. He and Mordo take her body, and Mordo teleports them back to his lair.
Once Carnage drains the remaining souls into the urn, Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Venom ambush them and they engage in a fight. Mordo orders Carnage to throw the urn into the portal to Dromammu’s dimension. Once he does so, Dormammu is freed. As they engage further in their battle, Spider-Man is able to send Dormammu back into his portal, thus allowing all souls to return to their bodies, including that of Ashley Kafka's and Lieutenant Lee's. In order to seal the portal completely, they send Carnage due to his connection made between him and Dormammu, but not before the latter tries to drag Ashley with him. Venom frees her and allows Carnage to take him instead. As they are all sucked in, the portal is sealed. However, Mordo (still intent on freeing Dormammu) escapes and is never seen again.
