Biography
Baron Reyland was the father of Kung Lao's girlfriend, Jan Reyland and the owner of a trading post in the city of Zhu Zin. He was a very wealthy and greedy man with connections to underworld organizations such as the Black Dragon to whom he owned money. He had many bodyguards at his disposal, most notably Siro and Takeda. He was against his daughter's relationship with Kung Lao, as he wanted her to marry a wealthy man. He also didn't believe that Mortal Kombat was real and thus didn't acknowledge Kung Lao as a champion and savior of the Earth realm.
When Kung Lao attempted to steal Jan, the Baron had him under arrest with the help of Takeda who was being possessed by Shang Tsung. He also punished Siro for helping them by having him go into exile. Despite his daughter's love for Kung Lao, the Baron didn't seem to care and ordered Kung Lao to be beheaded but he was saved by the thief Taja. She and Kung Lao fought the Baron's guards and tried to take Jan away. Takeda fought Kung Lao and overpowered him, even attempting to steal his soul for Shang Tsung. When Baron watched this, he started to realize that Kung Lao was right after all about Mortal Kombat and ordered his guards to stop Takeda but he was pushed back by him into a spear. The Baron apologized to Kung Lao and told him to take care of his daughter before finally dying.
After his death the trading post was owned by Kung Lao, Siro and Taja. His debts to the Black Dragon brought trouble to Kung Lao, Siro and Taja as they attacked them claiming that the trading post belonged to them. The Baron appeared again as an illusion in the episode "Unholy Alliance", when Shang Tsung and Quan Chi formed an alliance in order to trap Kung Lao.
