- NOTE: This article is about Voltes V: Legacy character. For the character from the original 1977 anime, see General Gurul.
Baron Zander is a supporting antagonist of Voltes V: Legacy. He is a high-ranking figure of the Boazanian Empire. He was portrayed by Ryan Eigenmann.
He is based on the character from the original Voltes V anime, General Gurul. The adapted character would deviate significantly from his 70's counterparts.
Personality[]
Zander desires nothing more than the appreciation of Zambojil. As a result, he will draft reports that are biased towards his favour. As a result of his reports many people were put to death. Zander seeks to usurp Zardoz and take his place.
History[]
Zander is first seen kicking and torturing a slave because he accused him of being complicit in a theft. Hrothgar catches him in the act and condemns him, saying that if he wants to keep his position, he must stop his cruelty or else. Zander reluctantly agrees.
On the day Hrothgar was to be crowned Emperor of Boazania, Zambojil exposed Hrothgar's horns as fake in front of the public. In Boazanian society, those with horns were allowed to live freely and those without horns were meant to be slaves, so the crowds, who had initially been supportive of Hrothgar, began jeering at him and calling him a slave. When Rozalia tried to defend her husband by producing a dagger and running at him, Zambojil shoved her to the ground like he did with Hrothgar. s these events were occuring, Zander smirked at Hrothgar and looked at Zambojil with admiration.
Zander hates Zardoz and when he speaks to him, he relentlessly insults him. Since he is part of Zambojil's court, Zardoz can't retaliate without consequences.
Zander is then seen with Zambojil as he tells Zuhl of his plan to dispose of Zardoz. Unbeknownst to them, Zandra was spying on them. Zandra overhears the plot to kill Zardoz, and is shocked and horrified by it.
When Zandra informs Zardoz of the truth, he is shaken and upset as he draws his sword at her even when she is willing to risk her life of standing by her word that it is true. He doesn't kill Zandra, but instead surmises that it must be Baron Zander behind the assassination plot because he can't believe his own uncle would do such a thing.
Differences[]
- Baron Xander was introduced much earlier in Legacy than Gurul was in the anime.
- Gurul is lean, tall and dark-skinned while his Xander is chubby, short and pale-skinned.
Trivia[]
- Like the actor for Emperor Zu Zambojil, Christian Vasquez, Ryan Eigenmann was a huge fan of the original Voltes V anime when he was a child.
