Barry “The Candy Man” is a minor antagonist in the Disney Channel animated series, Amphibia. He serves as the main antagonist of the Season 1 episode, "Cursed" and the Season 3 episode, "Sasha's Angels". He is a seemingly affable candy and berry salesman from Wartwood, who is secretly a sorcerer that curses people for petty reasons. He would later become the leader of a group of Marauders to take advantage of the devastation caused by King Andrias' takeover of Amphibia.
He was voiced by Keith Silverstein, who also voiced Captain Gantu in the Stitch! anime, Hammerhead in Marvel's Spider-Man, Dr. Wily in Mega Man 11, Hisoka Morow in Hunter X Hunter, Masayoshi Shido in Persona 5, HUNK in the Resident Evil series, Chairman Rose in Pokémon: Twilight Wings, the Cat Mask Seller in A Whisker Away, and Hawk Moth in the English dub of Miraculous Ladybug.
Biography[]
Barry first appeared in "Cursed" where Anne and Sprig accidentally bump into him. After they apologize, he gives them lollipops. However, the next day Anne and Sprig discover that they are cursed, with Sprig turning into a hairy fuzzball and Anne turning into a bird. They theorize that Maddie cursed because Sprig broke off their engagement. However, Maddie reveals that she was fine with Sprig breaking off their engagement and reveals that only the person who cast the curse can break it, which wasn't her. Maddie manages to find the person who cast the curse, who is revealed to be Barry, who did so out of revenge for Anne and Sprig spilling his supply of blue moon berries. Even after they apologize, Berry refuses to lift the curse, so Maddie fights him off with her own magic. She then uses her magic to swap the curse from Anne and Sprig to Barry, turning him into a fuzzy bird. Barry pleads Maddie to change him back, but Maddie is hesitant. However, she's convinced by Anne and Sprig to do so as a way for making up with him for doing him wrong. Maddie then agrees to lift the curse in exchange for some of Barry's candy.
Barry returns in "Sasha's Angels" where he becomes the leader of the Marauders, a band of amphibians who neither work for King Andrias nor the Wartwood Resistance during Andrias' conquest to takeover other worlds. Barry and his Marauders have been stealing supplies that are being delivered for the Resistance. When Anne, Sasha Waybright, Wally, Maddie, Toadie, Mrs. Croaker, and Loggle went to their camp to steal back their supplies, he captured Wally, Loggle, Toadie, Mrs. Croaker and Maddie, but Anne and Sasha escape. Barry reveals himself as the leader, as well as that he plans to sell them to Andrias to use in his army for a generous sum of money. Mrs. Croaker then tries to form a plan for them to escape, but gets knocked unconscious in the process, and they get reimprisoned. However, when Toadie gets pushed too far after one of Barrie's followers destroyed his pencils and sticky notes as well as steals his bow tie, he snaps and takes command of the group to form a new plan. This leads to them successfully breaking out, destroying the camp and getting their supplies back, and in the ensuing fight, Maddie turns Barry back into a chicken. The episode then ends with the rest of the Marauders consider eating him since all their food got destroyed, much to his alarm.

Trivia[]
- Barry's voice is patterned after the late comedian Ed Wynn, who is best known for voicing the Mad Hatter in Disney's Alice in Wonderland. Fittingly, his appearance also resembles the Mad Hatter's, as well as Willy Wonka from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.
