Barry Berkman, also known by his stage name Barry Block, is the titular main protagonist of the HBO tragicomedy crime series Barry.
He was a former marine turned hitman for Monroe Fuches, a friend of Barry's deceased father. Barry eventually wanted to leave on his own terms and found a father figure in acting class teacher, inspiring him to be an actor himself. Unfortunately, he continuously got dragged into doing more hit jobs, putting his morality and conscience to the test. He initially starts off as an anti-hero but continuously does more villainous acts for his own self-interest which damaged everyone closest to him.
He was portrayed by Bill Hader, who played Agent Haggard in Paul, and voiced Guy Gagné in Turbo, Hansel in Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil Bloodbottler in the 2016 The BFG film, King Leonard Mudbeard in the Angry Birds Movie franchise, and Cyrus Strange in The Addams Family 2.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Not much is known about Barry Berkman's past, but he was born in 1978 to John Berkman and an unnamed woman. Around the age of seven, Barry met his father's close friend Monroe Fuches, who became a father figure for him during his youth.
Military Service[]
In adulthood, Berkman joined the United States Marine Corps and served in in Iraq and Afghanistan around 2001 /2002.He was mainly Stationed in Baqubah then went to Afghanistan, where he earned praise for killing individuals from a lookout point between his Deployments in Sanjin and Korengal Barry had been promoted to Sargent this can be seen on the patch he wears in in the photo of him after being discharged. While serving in Korengal At around 2007 / 2008, Barry and his unit were ambushed while his second known investigating the death of a donkey, which resulted in Berkman killing an innocent man in a fit of rage. He was then taken to a hospital and was discharged from the military, leaving him depressed and feeling that he had no purpose. However, Fuches convinced him to become a hitman, thus starting Monroe's manipulations of his son-like figure.

Season One[]
With another assignment from Fuches after around 8 years of working together, Barry travels to Los Angeles to meet Chechen Mafia boss Goran Pazar, who sends the hitman to kill Ryan Madison for having an affair with his wife. Berkman follows Ryan and ends up having to infiltrate an acting class run by Gene Cousineau, and is given the stage name Barry Block. With the Chechens watching the ordered hit, they see Ryan hug Barry and believe he won't fulfill the contract. As a result, Pazar orders NoHo Hank and his subordinates to kill both Ryan and Barry, but the latter kills them and wounds Hank before escaping.
He continues the acting class while Fuches remains paranoid and wants to go on the offensive while Barry wants him to return to Cleveland They get captured by the Chechens and Barry is forced to to a hit on a Bolivian gang member Paco after he kills Paco he hooks up with Sally Reed a classmate of his, after he hooks up with Sally he reconnects with a old friend of his Chris and invites him to a party while at the party he meets to other marines Taylor Garret and Vaughn. When they leave the party Taylor finds plans for Barry’s next hit a raid against a Bolivian warehouse and he wants in.During the raid Barry contemplates killing Taylor but decides not to wanting Taylor to take his place in Fuches’s operation so he could leave the game. The next hit is to kill the Bolivian Crime Lord Cristobal Taylor botched the plan bringing Chris and Vaughn and going in guns blazing getting him and Vaughn to get shot to death then Barry and Chris escape but Barry gets held at gun point and he orders Chris to shoot the gang member in the chest which he does then they escape. Barry also gets the role of Macbeth but gets demoted down and Gene is angry that he is not preforming well. Chris and Barry meet up later the former talking about turning him self in which causes Barry to shoot him in the head making it look like a suicide.When he gets back to the class they are preforming and due to Barry’s guilt of killing Chris he pulls off a good performance it ultimately decides to leave L.A taking his money from Fuches and assaulting him.

Barry was a meek, socially awkward man, the type of person you wouldn't expect to be a professional killer. While his past childhood is for the most part unknown, we learn he sufferwd from PTSD during his time as a marine in Afghanistan. He's also the person who's always was for orders to follow, not truly believing in himself to make his life's decisions. This also made him very naïve, buying Fuches's lies for years on how he only was hired to kill "bad people." He was also shown to be very neurotic, constantly nervous about others finding out about his past as a hitman. Barry was also shown to deal with depression; he's miserable with how all he has to show for his life is his ability to kill. His boss is very manipulative and abusive who doesn't even let him reap the contract money he gets, and is constantly longing to have a normal life.
As the series progresses, we see him growing more unhinged, nihilistic, selfish, and violent, desperate to cling to this new life he's made for himself. He is willing to resort to murder more, despite his reluctance to, but will do so anyway for his selfishness. We learn from his marine flashbacks that a part of Barry was always very mentally disturbed which was only exacerbated during his service. He is also prone to blind fits of homicidal rage, killing others who dare cross paths with him, even those who are innocent. In the first half of the final season Barry is suicidal he gets a prison guard to beat him half to death. In the ladder half of season 4, he has found God and a father he loves his son but is very psychologically abusive to him along with Sally as he wants to make sure he is never found out. He also uses his newfound belief in religion as an excuse for his self-centeredness, evident when he finds sermons that allow him to justify his actions.
When learning that a biopic is being made about him and Sally (with Gene acting as a consultant), Barry lets go of his peaceful life and promises to kill Cousineau.
Appearance[]
Barry is quite tall standing in at 6ft 2 inches (according to episode 2x7 “The Audition”). He has short, black hair, and greyish-blue eyes, and in season 3 he has a greying stubble beard. His most common outfits are neutral-colored henley shirts with some type of cargo pants and boots.
Skills and Abilities[]
- Genius Level Intellect: He outsmarted the FBI for 8 years and he was able to fake his and his wife's identity. It was so good he was able to buy guns and buy stuff online, he broke out of prison with ease, and he planned a raid against the Bolivians who are pretty smart by himself it was going to plan until his partner messed it up. He planned an assassination on Cristobal with a pretty full proof plan until his partner messed it up, Manipulated and deceived the L.A.P.D. multiple times like using different phones for alibies, tying a gun to a tree just in case Janice does not give up making it look like the Chechen's killed Janice, has knowledge of war and tactics from his military experience, knew how to make someone feel insane. He also deduced that the man was gonna kill him by sweating and looking above him. He also can gain information against all of his victims in a couple of days and get away with multiple murders in over 18 years.
- Manipulation: He Manipulated Hank to do some of his dirty work and Hank is a smart person being able to hide his crimes through a front with ease and killing all of the crime bosses in L.A. until Fuches and Cristobal showed how Barry does not care about him. He also indirectly manipulates the media into thinking Gene is the true villain and indirectly manipulates the L.A.P.D. into thinking Ryan Madison is a Hitman.
- Military Training: He served in the United States Marine Corps, thus receiving extensive training in tactics, weaponry, and combat.
- Peak Human Strength: Barry has demonstrated peak human strength on numerous occasions. He broke a wall almost in half by accident, threw Ronny Around while injured, kicked a hole through a door by accident, and broke Ronny Proxin's windpipe by accident. He also scales to Ronny who broke a man's neck with a kick and broke steel.
- Peak Human Speed: He ran from his apartment and up a building in 13 seconds while not running at full speed, ran to Janet's body in 57 seconds which was so deep in the Forrest the police could not find it for a month, outran a dirt bike while just being in a car crash, and escaped from Gene's house in under a second.
- Peak Human Reflexes: He's killed three men in one-third of a second, and has reacted to assault rifle and sniper rounds after they were fired.
- Peak Human Durability: He survived a car crash that flipped 12 times in the desert, got shot by a .44 magnum to the heart and was fine, got stabbed two in the shoulder with a knife, got kicked through a closet, got beaten badly with nunchucks, got beaten by a prison guard badly, tanked kicks from Ronny who broke a guys neck with that same kick and scales higher then Cristobal who survived his mansion blowing in his and with power scaling that puts him up to city block plus or more.
- Peak Human Stamina: He stood still outside of his house an entire night and was still the same as the night before he took in torture from Jim Moss who was so good he changed a man's native language from English to German and made a Viet Cong soldier kill himself and he was going hard on Barry since he killed Janice and he completely fine when he later that day.
- Peak Human Endurance: He was fine after being in multiple car crashes. He was also able to fight Ronny and threw him and attacked him with the arm where he got stabbed in the shoulder blades. He had really bad treatment which made it worse, and got bashed in the head by a gangster with the stock of an assault rifle and got up a little shaken up.
- Master Marksman: He shot three people 700 yards away with a sniper, killed one of the best Chechen assassins before he could shoot him with his sniper, shot a gangster in the chest before he could react, and killed Janice a trained officer with a gun while she had a gun trained on him and knew he was a murderer and killed 2 other men while they shot at him with assault rifles, killed 26+ military trained Gangsters with a Glock 19 without getting harmed.
- Hand-to-Hand Combat: He was even with Ronny who is the best taekwondo fighter in the world, and is trained in BJJ, krav maga, and Muay Thai to kung fu, Isshin-ryu karate, and taekwondo from the Marines.
