If you were to go on a trip... where would you like to go?
~ Bartholomew Kuma before using his Devil Fruit powers.
We will not be seeing one another again... farewell.
~ Bartholomew Kuma's last words to Luffy before losing his free will to the Pacifista project's finalization.

Bartholomew Kuma is a major character in the One Piece franchise. He is a cyborg who served as a Warlord and an officer of the Revolutionary Army. After the events on Sabaody Archipelago, he has been modified into a full Pacifista under the World Government's orders as a slave-to-rent of the Celestial Dragons for protecting the Thousand Sunny. However, he was later rescued by his fellow Revolutionary led by Sabo and pledge his loyalty to Monkey D. Dragon again.

He is later revealed to be the adoptive father of Jewelry Bonney, a pirate from the Worst Generation and a sole survivor of his race known as the Buccaneers. He is the arch-nemesis of one of the Five Elders, Jaygarcia Saturn.

He is voiced by Hideyuki Hori and Nobuhiko Okamoto as a child in Japanese and Joel McDonald in English, who voiced Zeref Dragneel in Fairy Tail.

Personality[]

When he was a child before being abducted by World Government, he was kind and cheerful person, who always admired Nika. As a slave, Kuma is a sad and miserable boy when he was abused by the Celestial Dragons (who abducted him and killed his parent). He is also suicidal when he begged anyone to kill him.

Before the modifications, Kuma was a very kind and calm person who tends to not get surprised by anything. Despite working for the World Government, he willingly helped the Straw Hat Pirates escape with their lives, mainly due to Luffy being the son of Dragon and seeing Nika inside him. Even before being modified, Kuma remained relatively emotionless, though his interactions with the Revolutionaries suggest he was a gentle man whose kindness earned him the rightful respect amongst his companions. Though he is said to be the most co-operative and obedient member of the Shichibukai, he is said to actually hate the World Government and does in fact pose his own agenda of helping the Revolutionaries secretly plot against them.

After the modifications were done to him, Kuma completely lost his free will and strictly followed orders from the World Government. After his rescued by Sabo, Kuma has Repledged his loyalty to Dragon as he addressed the World's Worst Criminal as "Master". Despite losing his free will, he still retained his fatherly instinct of protecting his daughter.

Strong emotions from a host donor can be carried into the clones made by Vegapunk, with another example in Kuma's fatherly love for his adopted daughter, Jewelry Bonney, being so strong that it persists inside his genetic code, even when his clones are modified to become the Pacifistas; as such, the Pacifistas become reluctant if not outright unable to attack Bonney.

Biography[]

Background[]

Kuma was born in the Sorbet Kingdom with his father being a Buccaneer and his mother being human. Shortly after his birth, one of the World Government agent discovered Kuma’s heritage as a Buccaneer, so they abducted him and his parent to be slave to Celestial Dragons. He learned from his father about Nika. After his parent died, he became sad and heartbroken. At some point, he was force to be part of a hunting game at God Valley, where he met Emperio Ivankov and Ginny, who were also slaves. Kuma joined in on Ivankov’s and Ginny’s plan to escape by causing the God Valley Incident, so they can steal Devil Fruits, which Kuma successfully ate, that can allow them to escape along with around 500 slaves.

After their escape, they return to Sorbet Kingdom. While Ivankov departed to travel all over the world, Kuma and Ginny remained on Sorbet Kingdom. Kuma spent years as a pastor to repel the sick and the pain from the elderly each week and takes all of it to himself or else the pain and sickness will return to the original source. Also, Kuma and Ginny grew close to each other that she wanted to marry him, but Kuma declined because he feared that they would be abducted by the Celestial Dragon for discovering his heritage as it did with his parents. When the corrupt king of Sorbet made it difficult for the elderly, Kuma acted in defiance, but he was put in prison along with Ginny and his friends. Dragon and Ivankov freed them after they overthrow the tyrannical ruler, and together they form a Revolutionary Army.

Kuma and Ginny spent years fighting as soldiers of the Revolutionary Army, with Ginny eventually becoming the commander of the Eastern forces. One day, however, Ginny's unit was hit with a surprise attack and defeated. Ginny, who had caught the eye of a Celestial Dragon, was kidnapped and was forced into two years of sexual slavery. Eventually, Ginny gave birth to her daughter, Bonney. Around this time, Ginny contracted a terminal illness known as Sapphire Scales which covers one's skin in sapphire-like scales when exposed to natural light and will continue spreading until they take the victim's life. Ginny and Bonney, who had contracted her mother's illness, were then exiled from the Holy Land.

Ginny used the last of her energy to safely bring her daughter to the church in the Sorbet kingdom, exposing herself to a lethal amount of natural light in the process. At death's door, she was able to call the Revolutionary Army one last time. Kuma, who had spent the last two years beside himself with grief and worry for the woman he loved, immediately left for the Sorbet kingdom upon realizing where Ginny was. Tragically, Kuma was unable to hear Ginny's last words. She told Kuma that she loved him one last time as life left her body and she breathed her last breath.

Kuma arrived at the church to find Ginny's corpse, now unrecognizable from the scales covering her entire body. Crying beside Ginny was her daughter Bonney. Kuma, vowing to protect the daughter of the woman he loved, took in Bonney as his own child. As the years went on, Kuma and Bonney became extremely close as father and child. Although Kuma loved Bonney with all of his heart, she was never able to leave the church lest she be exposed to natural light and lose her life just as her mother did. Eventually, Kuma resigned from the Revolutionary Army, deciding that he needed to devote himself to being Bonney's father and do everything he can to find out what her illness was.

After several check-ups from different doctors, Kuma's worst fears were confirmed: Bonney's illness was both terminal and incurable. In the best case scenario where she avoids all natural light, she still will not live past 10 years of age. Bonney, overhearing a portion fo Kuma's conversation with the doctor, misconstrued their words and believed that she'd be cured from her illness when she becomes ten. Kuma, not having the heart to tell his daughter the awful truth, tells her that she's correct as he desperately tries to find some way to save her life. When Bekori returned intending to reclaim his kingdom by burning the southern part of the region of Sorbet, this action made Kuma had to destory the castle and made him overthrown with the citizens wanted Kuma to be the ruler of Sorbet. In truth, Kuma only became a king by name with his advisor, Bulldog, who was the good king before Bekori's rule, doing all the political issue as he is only content to helping elderly people at the church. He was surprised that Jewelry Bonney ate a devil fruit, Toshi Toshi no mi, that allows to change to age appearance. Bulldog and Connie, who is Bulldog's mother, came to the church to warn Kuma about the Bekori return and the attempt to take back the kingdom, and he made a propaganda that declared Kuma a "Tyrant". Kuma decided to relinquish the throne to Bulldog, and leave the care of Bonney to him. When he started to leave the island, he saw Bekori with fleet attempting to kill him. Kuma have had enough of Bekori's actions that he effortlessly took down the fleet along with Bekori. He went on a sea to find a cure for Jewelry Bonney.

Kuma was informed by Dragon and Ivankov of Dr. Vegapunk's residence in Egghead Island which he just moved to so they took the opportunity of his defenses being down to request medical assistance, after arriving to the island with Bonney Vegapunk immediately took interest in Kuma's body and as a result made a deal with him to become the model for his next invention, a line of powerful robots that would work for the World Government, and in exchange Vegapunk would cure Bonney of her disease free of charge. What Kuma and Vegapunk were'nt aware of was that Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, one of the five elders, was eavesdropping on their conversation through a hidden Den-Den Mushi, Saturn blackmailed Kuma into becoming a cyborg devoid of personality to serve the World Government or else he and Bonney would be sent away to work as slaves, though Vegapunk resisted to the idea Kuma agreed as long as Bonney would be cured and promised not to rebel if they sent Bonney back to Sorbet Island to which Saturn agreed. Over the course of one year Bonney and Kuma's procedures would be close to completion so Bonney was sent back to Sorbet Kingdom with Kuma sending her one last letter with his last remaining moments of free will. He then eventually joined the Seven Warlords of the Sea, as part of his alligenace to the World Government.

Jaya Arc[]

Kuma first appeared at a meeting at Marie Geois with Donquixote Doflamingo and Dracule Mihawk. The meeting had to do with finding a replacement for Crocodile after he was defeated by Luffy in Alabasta. Laffitte appeared and suggested Marshall D. Teach be a new member.

Thriller Bark Arc[]

Kuma later appeared in Thriller Bark where he was commissioned by the Sengoku to kill Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates. While on Thriller Bark, Kuma caused Perona to disappear. When Gecko Moria was defeated, Kuma began attacking some of the pirates there. Zoro faced him where Kuma took all the pain from Luffy and transferred it into a bubble and thrust it at Zoro. Despite having the advantage over the Straw Hat Pirates, Kuma spared them and left Thriller Bark.

Sabaody Archipelago Arc[]

Kuma appeared along with Kizaru and many Pacifista units in Sabaody Archipelago after Luffy punched Saint Charloss, a Celestial Dragon. While he’s on the island, he saw his daughter at the restaurant without her noticing. He learned that Luffy punched a Celestial Dragon for defending a Fishman friend, Hatchan. This made him convinced that Luffy would the one who can change the world much like his idol Nika. Kuma fought some members of the Worst Generation before cornering the Straw Hats and making them disappear one at a time until he banished Luffy from Sabaody Archipelago to Amazon Lily. In actuality, this was to protect them as they are not ready to go to New World and needed them to get stronger.

Some point afterwards, Kuma got surgery from Vegapunk where he had his personality supplanted with that of a robot so that he can become PX-0. As a result, the real Kuma is considered dead and he is now a robot that serves the World Government. But before losing himself to the surgery, Kuma asked Vegapunk to program him to give him free will to do a few things before becoming a robot, and he left a copy of his memory in the form of a paw for Vegapunk’s research.

Marineford Arc[]

Kuma participated in the Marineford War where he fought alongside the Marines against the Whitebeard Pirates and their allies. Ivankov wanted to know what happened to Kuma but Doflamingo told him about the surgery he underwent and how he is no longer the Kuma he knew. After the war was over, Kuma left along with the other warlords.

Fish-Man Island Arc[]

When the Straw Hats were separated for two years, Kuma protected the Straw Hat Pirate ship at Sabaody Archipelago from vandals and others who would try to steal it until Franky arrived. But more importantly, it turns out that Kuma only seperated the Straw Hat Pirates to protect them.

Levely Arc[]

At some point, Kuma was made into a slave by the Celestial Dragons and is a slave to Saint Rosward. Lindberg states that the Celestial Dragons do not care about kings and that they were making an example of him for going against them.

Egghead Arc[]

Kuma was eventually rescued by Sabo and the Revolutionary commanders. When Dragon asked him what happened in Mary Geoise, Kuma confirmed Dragon's commands and calling him as Master.

He later teleported to Mary Geoise and attacking the Marines. Kuma eventually climbing up the Red-Line despite of his injuries. He was confronted with Fleet Admiral Sakazuki who intend to kill him since the Government cannot control him anymore. Kuma lost both his face and his leg was melt but only to use his Devil Fruit to teleport once again, escaping from Akainu.

He eventually arrived to Egghead, where managed to save Bonney from Saturn’s attack and punched the Elder. Kuma then gives Bonney a warming hug. While unable to move due to the injuries he sustained, Kuma was later carried by Atlas to get to safety. While attempting to get the meeting point, they were prevented by Kizaru. Kuma grabbed Bonney from falling while Bonney commands the Pacifista Mark iii to attack the Marines. When Kizaru attempted to attack Kuma and Bonney, Luffy saved them by punching Kizaru. Kuma (despite lost his will) witness Luffy's drum of liberation dance. Kuma and the others go on while Luffy and Sanji confronts Kizaru. Kuma and the others are taken to the Giant Warrior Pirates' ship while Dorry and Brogy are heading to Luffy's location. Kuma is placed on the Giants' ship. He shown a genuine smile for Bonney for beating up Saturn. Kuma and the others escaped from Egghead thanks to Emet using Joy Boy's Conqueror's Haki to render the Five Elders' forms useless, sending all but Saturn back to Mary Geoise. Kuma was embraced by Bonney.

Powers and Abilities[]

Devil Fruit[]

Kuma ate the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi (Paw-Paw Fruit) that allows him to repel anything with the palms of his hands. This Devil Fruit is very formidable as it can deflect almost any attack (including sword slashes), air, and even pain itself. Kuma can also use this Devil Fruit power to send people away to where he chooses.

Cyborg Modifications[]

As a Pacifista, Kuma is able to fire light beams from his mouth. He is also very durable and is capable of withstanding a lot of attacks without showing much damage unlike other Pacifistas combined with his Buccaneer’s heritage. Despite his large size, Kuma is able to move very fast, even faster than Luffy's Gear Second speed. By using his Devil Fruit powers on himself, Kuma is also able to teleport from one place to another.

Haki[]

Kuma revealed he has Busoshoku Haki when he coated his hand of punching Jaygarcia Saturn to sent a member of the Five Elders flying towards the cities.
