~ Quote summarizing Barton from novel cover.
Barton George Dawes is the main protagonist in King’s tenth novel Roadwork, his third novel published under the alias ‘Richard Bachman.’ After refusing to move out of his home by orders of the city council, Barton proceeds to participate in a series of violent acts of protest.
Biography[]
Barton was an impulsive, stubborn and alcoholic accountant working at Blue Ribbon Laundry. Three years before the story took place, Barton's son passed away from brain cancer, which left him grieving for years to come.
He slowly loses his sanity as his home and work life become upended due to a government project that planned to extend the city's highway. This plan would demolish both his home and workplace. His relationship with his wife falls apart and she leaves him and he impulsively buys guns. Also around this time, he befriends a hitchhiker by the name of Olivia Brenner and a used car salesman named Sal Maglimore. Eventually, the city council gives him a final eviction notice, giving him until the 20th of January to move out of his home.
On the day he was ordered to move out, he wired his home with explosives. When police arrive with the council's lawyer, Barton proceeds to have a shootout with them. The lawyer, known as Fenner, tried to talk some sense into him, but to no avail. As more police arrive, the local media begin to cover the event. During their interview, teargas is deployed, something Fenner had tried to stop. In the end, he blows up his home, destroying it and killing himself.
