You are not wise enough to fear me as I should be feared.
~ Bast

Bastas, more commonly known as Bast, is a major protagonist in The Kingkiller Chronicle, by Patrick Rothfuss. He is also the main protagonist of The Lightning Tree, later revised as The Narrow Road Between Desires, which is a prequel to the Chronicle. He is a Fae who lives in the human realm with Kvothe. While he usually acts heroic, he is revealed to have a darker side and will go to extreme and violent lengths to achieve his goals.

History[]

Early Life[]

Bast was born in the Fae. Not much is known about what he did there and why he left. At some point, after 150 years, he left the Fae to go to the human world. There, he met Kvothe and started studying under him. At some point, he also met Kvothe's love interest, Denna.

The Lightning Tree/The Narrow Road between Desires[]

Bast has a deal with the children of Newarre, where he trades secrets, information, and favors with them. His rules are as follows.

"No one taller than the stone.

Come to blacktree, come alone. Tell no adult what’s been said, lest the lightning strike you dead."

A teenager named Rike asked Bast to help get rid of his abusive father Jessom Williams. Bast sent Rike to make a "charm". During this time, he used his favors from the other children to attack Jessom, force him to leave, and make it look to the adults as if Jessom stole Crazy Martin's booze and ran away to protect himself.

The Name of the Wind[]

At some point, Bast intentionally let slip information that Kvothe was hiding in Newarre. When Chronicler came, he began to write down Kvothe's story while Bast listened. Chronicler suspected that Bast was Fae and called the name of iron to bind him. Furious, Bast tried to kill him. However, Kvothe stepped in, and Bast and Chronicler apologized to each other.

Near the end of the day, a Mahael-uret or skindancer possessing a mercenary attacked the inn. He killed Shep before Bast managed to stop him and Aaron killed him.

Later that night, Bast snuck into Chronicler's room. He told him that it was he who brought Chronicler to the inn and ordered him to use the story to make Kvothe remember that he was a hero. When Chronicler tried to refuse, Bast threatened to kill him if he didn't compy.

The Wise Man's Fear[]

Bast and Chronicle continued to listen to the story. However, when Kvothe mentioned that he listened to the Cthaeh, Bast became furious and told them that the Cthaeh is the most evil being in existence and anyone who hears him causes great disaster.

At some point, Bast left and several thugs went into the inn and assaulted Kvothe. When Bast returned, he saw that Kvothe had a tooth knocked out, so he used magic to switch his tooth for Kvothe's.

Later that night, Bast and Chronicler argue about whether or not the Cthaeh is a true threat. Chronicler pointed out that if the Cthaeh manipulates you no matter what you do, you may as well do what you want. Bast agrees, thinking that this way of thinking supports his plans.

Bast then snuck out of the inn to meet with the thugs who attacked Kvothe. It is revealed that he hired them to attack him, hoping that it Kvothe would heroically defeat them. Bast then attacked, and possibly killed, one of the men.
