~ Cpt. Frank Finney on Batman's descent into villainy. |
Bruce Wayne, also known as Batman, is the main antagonist of the first season finale of the 2018 DC live-action TV series Titans. As he was created by Trigon to corrupt Dick Grayson to make him his slave, this Batman is actually an alternate (but dark) version of the real Batman.
While starting off as a heroic vigilante, however, following a series of losses during his crimefighting years, he became dark and sinister, devoid of all humanity, with a penchant for murdering criminals and even members of his rogues gallery. Batman's descent into villainy is what drove Dick Grayson to try and stop him only to then kill him after he murdered Starfire, thus allowing Trigon to succeed in corrupting Dick.
He was portrayed by Alain Moussi.
Biography[]
In a fake reality created by Trigon in an attempt to corrupt Dick Grayson and bring him to the darkness, this reality's Batman, during his years of crimefighting, suffered several losses, which began to take a heavy toll on him; Jason Todd was rendered paraplegic after being shot by the Riddler, Barbara Gordon had suddenly disappeared and is now missing, and Batman's butler Alfred Pennyworth had died from unknown causes. In addition, Batman and Superman had a falling out and had distanced themselves from each other. These losses caused the former to become mentally unstable and started losing his sanity. However, after his close ally Commissioner Gordon was murdered by the Joker, this was the last straw. The loss of Commissioner Gordon cause Batman to have a mental breakdown and he began seeking vengeance on the Joker for his act.
Disturbed by what his former mentor had become, Jason, now confined to a wheelchair, pays Dick Grayson a visit to warn him that Batman is seeking to kill the Joker. Returning to Gotham City, Dick hopes to talk some sense into him and have him let go of his vengeance, but this would prove to be in vain, as Batman has since lost all of his humanity and morality, and no longer cares of his moral code. Finding the Joker, he throws him off a roof in an attempt to kill him, causing the Joker's body to get smashed on top of a car while his face smashed through its windscreen. However, Joker survived the fall but is left comatose. When Dick goes to Wayne Manor to tell Batman of the Joker's survival, he was denied entry into the Batcave, as Batman, having possibly anticipated Dick's arrival, had isolated himself from his former sidekick.
Though Dick had advised him to give up on his vengeance, as he would end up breaking his moral code and abandoning all he had believed in, this fell on deaf ears, as Batman, now having a lust for blood, only cares about avenging Commissioner Gordon; That night, he broke into the hospital where the Joker was being held and stabbed him to death with a batarang in cold blood. By the time Dick arrived to stop him, the Joker is already dead. Before Dick could even stop him, Batman escaped from the hospital and sped off in his Batmobile. Despite having got his revenge, this did not sate his bloodlust. Breaking into Arkham Asylum, he began massacring not only every inmate, including the Riddler, Two-Face, and the Ventriloquist, but also the staff. Despite this, several managed to survive but were left badly wounded. Koriand'r/Starfire, a former Teen Titan and now an FBI agent, who was investigating the scene of the crime, tells Dick that Batman has to be stopped since he is now beyond saving.
This compels Dick to reveal Batman's secret identity as Bruce Wayne to the GCPD, who sent Kory and a SWAT unit to raid Wayne Manor with the task of arresting Batman. During the raid, they implanted bombs in several parts of the manor. With Dick's help, they were able to find the Batcave. As they tried to search for Batman, they were unaware that they had went right into a trap, and though Dick alerted them, it was too late and they were immediately ambushed. Though they tried to take down Batman, they were all slaughtered, with Dick helplessly looking on in horror. Police Captain Frank Finney, begged Batman to spare him, but the latter mercilessly slashed his face without a word. Kory, who was separately in a corridor of the Batcave, finds all of her fellow officers dead before her with Finney managing to survive long enough to point out Batman to her before dying from his wounds. Before she could use her fire powers to take him down, Batman was prepared for it and he kills Starfire with a cold gun. Seeing her die before his very eyes, Dick gives into his anger and detonates the bombs, destroying the inside of Wayne Manor.
Death[]
Entering the Batcave, which was mostly caved in from the explosion, Dick finds Starfire's frozen corpse. Noticing Batman trapped under a pile of rubble, he spitefully tells him that he had gotten what he wanted, which is making his own protege a murderer like him. In his fury, Dick kills Batman by stomping on his neck, killing him and ending his threat for good. With his death, the many victims that were killed at his hands are avenged.
Legacy[]
Despite being killed in the fake reality, the alternate Batman was successful in making Dick be overcome with his own rage, making him susceptible to Trigon's control, though it was short-lived when Trigon's daughter Raven managed to bring Dick back to his senses, thus freeing from him from her father's control.
