| ~ The Bats to mice. |
The Bats are minor antagonists in Mouse Guard, serving as secondary antagonists in Winter 1152. They are a species of winged mammals who distrust all other creatures, since they a despised by birds for having fur, and mammals for having wings. Most of them live in the massive abandoned underground weasel city of Darkheather.
Appearance[]
Bats a mammal, looking somewhat similar to mice, except that they have large leathery wings. They tend to be a little taller than the average mouse, and usually hand upside down from ceiling when they are not flying.
History[]
Bat Legend[]
According to the bats themselves, many centuries ago, there was a terrible war between the creature who lived on the ground and the creatures who lived in the sky. The bats offered their allegiance to both sides, but were distrusted by the birds for having fur, and the mammals for having wings. As a result, they were massacred by both sides, and moved underground to isolate themselves from all other creatures.
Encounter with the Guard[]
At some point, a large colony of bats moved to the underground weasel city of Darkheather. It is unclear if this was while the weasels were living there, and if so, whether the weasels knew about it. Either way, after the weasel left the tunnels, the bats took them over completely.
One day, a group of three mice entered Darkheather, and the bats subtly watched them. Eventually, the mice entered a massive chamber filled with bats, who accused the mice of intruding. One of the mice, Saxon, accused the bats of being spies, which angered them, and prompted them to attack. Faced with hundreds of bats, two of the mice fled, but Saxon tried to fight them off. Eventually he was picked up by a bat who lifted him high into the air and tried to drop him onto a pile of mouse bones from the Weasel War. However, Saxon stabbed the bat, killing it, and used its body to break his fall. The other bats flew over and took their fallen comrade's body, lifting it out of the tunnels through a hole in the roof so they could have a death ceremony under the stars.
Powers and Abilities[]
The bats are slightly larger and stronger than mice and use their clawed feet for combat. They also have the ability to fly.
What makes bats more dangerous than most other creature is their numbers. They very organized when attacking, and oftentimes finish eachothers sentences when speaking, until it gets to a point when talking to horde of bats can feel like talking to a single entity. They also have a stronger sense of comradery than any creature other than mice, deeply mourning the loss of one of their kind. This likely stems from only being able to trust each other.
Trivia[]
- The bat were the first creatures other than mice to speak in Mouse Guard but were soon followed by the rabbits.
