Bauk is a creature originating from the Serbian mythology, alongside Drekavac.
History[]
Reportedly, the Bauk often resides and hides in dark locations, including abounded houses and empty holes. When hidden, the Bauk would wait for the perfect moment, in order to capture, drag and feast on it's victim. However, the Bauk runs away when it sees any kind of light, or hears noise.
The Bauk is primarily depicted as some kind of large bear that has been extinct, and that it's known only as a myth. Others also described the Bauk as being very similar to a humanoid furry creatue, the werewolf, or the Sasquatch. Some even would classify the Bauk as a demonic creature.
In Modern Media[]
- When translating the works of the late J. R. R. Tolkien to Serbian, the word "Goblin", has been translated to "Bauk".
- When translating the series A Song of Ice and Fire to Serbian, the "Imp" has been translated to "Bauk".
- When translating the Harry Potter series, the "Boggart" has been translated to "Bauk".
