Even after being consumed, the throbbing heart of Bayle continues to resist its subjugation, never weakening. One day, the fire within will consume the very body and soul of its Communion devourer. One day.
~ Bayle's Flame Lightning and Tyranny.

Bayle the Dread is a major antagonist and an optional boss in the 2022 dark fantasy action role-playing video game DLC Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. He is the forefather of the Lesser Dragons known as the Drakes, who attempted to overthrow Placidusax in hopes of claiming his title as the Dragonlord.

Appearance[]

Bayle is a massive black and red dragon with red eyes and three curved horns angled downward. His appearance appears to be heavily scarred and damaged from his battle with Placidusax, as his wings have been heavily torn and shredded with the bones protruding out of his skin. His left leg has been ripped off entirely and the remaining heads of Placidusax appear to have been bitten deep into his bony back.

History[]

Bayle is believed to be one of the oldest known dragons, being the forefather of the Lesser Dragons known as the Drakes. At some point, he had attempted to usurp Placidusax's title as the Dragonlord, leading to a deadly battle between the two. While Bayle was able to grievously injure Placidusax, Bayle was in turn greatly beaten. Ultimately, he was forced to flee away with the rest of his Drakes into the Land of Shadow. Despite this, some Ancient Dragons would actually side with Bayle for unknown reasons and accompany him to the Land of Shadow.

Seriously injured and weakened, Placidusax would create the process of dragon communion: a method for warriors to consume the hearts of Bayle's drake progeny to gain powers akin to a dragon. With numerous dragons assuming humanoid forms to act as priestesses, these Drake Warriors would be urged on to hunt down the drakes in hope of obtaining even more power, hopefully to take on Bayle himself one day. Unfortunately, numerous Drake Warriors would meet their end at the Dread's wings, with some even turning into Magma Wyrms from the heretical nature of dragon communion.

Bayle has since built his reputation as the vilest, most foul dragon to exist, being described as a harbinger that brings about havoc and destruction everywhere he goes. At some point, he had came into conflict with a Drake Warrior known as Igon, who would swear vengeance upon him after suffering a major defeat from Bayle.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike Placidusax, Bayle seems to be able to regenerate his missing limbs. During his second phase, he manages to restore two of his wings that he had lost during his mortal fight against his nemesis.
  • Igon's hatred of Bayle is likely a homage to the relationship between Captain Ahab and the whale Moby Dick in the eponymous story: both Igon and Ahab lost legs in their first encounters against their respective archnemeses, vowing vengeance against them and eventually dying in a final confrontation with the monster, though Igon can actually succeed in helping the Tarnished kill Bayle.
    • Furthermore, the arrows Igon crafts for you to kill Bayle, despite their small size, are still called harpoons, calling back to the weapons used by Ahab and his whaling crew to hunt down whales.
    • Bayle also happens to rhyme with whale.
