History[]
Bayta Mallow was born on the planet Rossem, a peripheral agricultural colony controlled by the Foundation. Her parents, subject to the Foundation's one-child policy, were forced to dispose of one of their children. They chose to drown the future Mule. However, the child awakened his psychic powers and forced his parents to commit suicide, forcing them to drown themselves. This act triggered the awakening of her mental abilities, marking the beginning of her quest for power. She then took her younger brother and dropped him off with their neighbors.
Bayta realized that Toran had become her whole world and stopped pursuing other ambitions, vowing that they would rise or fall together. Alongside her husband, she produced public “scatters” showcasing their life together. They posed, played pranks, and entertained people. On one occasion, spectators watched them eat—but only because they did it nude. The couple was on Kalgan during the Mule’s coup, though their main concern was the pirate ship Blacktongue, which was blocking their sunlight.
Bayta and Toran were recruited by Captain Han Pritcher of Foundation Intelligence to help get close to the Mule, who was hosting a party on Kalgan. Toran noted that his uncle was Randu Mallow, and if they were caught spying, it would raise suspicions about the Traders’ Alliance, providing cover for Mayor Indbur and the Foundation.
They agreed to attend the party with Pritcher. Once inside, he warned them to stay back and then left. Soon after, he returned visibly anxious and told them to go home before departing again. Bayta and Toran decided to investigate the Mule on their own. Bayta planned to speak with their balladeer, Magnifico Giganticus, but needed a distraction. Toran went to confront the Mule directly. With the Mule distracted, Bayta showed sympathy for Magnifico and helped him leave the nightclub, quickly joined by Toran, who was being pursued by the Mule’s pirate crew.
Aboard their ship, Bayta was furious that Toran had been injured and wanted to kill the Mule, but they were forced to flee Kalgan. Their ship, the Chaser, was hit by a missile but managed to jump. The damage prevented them from reaching New Terminus as planned, and Toran realized the only possible destination was Haven. Unfortunately, they were shot down near the Traders’ Bastion, with their communications damaged. A group of traders led by Randu Mallow rescued all three of them. Bayta convinced Randu that helping them deliver Magnifico to the Foundation would be beneficial, and that his involvement could also help the traders. Randu agreed.
