Bean Argyle, was an antagonist in the Japanese dark fantasy franchise Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World. Although he did not appear in the main 2014 light novel series, he acted as the main antagonist of The Dream of the Lion King, the first volume of the spin-off series Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World Ex. He was, until his untimely death, the arch-nemesis of his son Felix Argyle.
Biography[]
Bean Argyle was the head of the House of Argyle, a small noble household within the Kingdom of Lugunica that served as a vassal to the greater House of Karsten. Behind the back of his wife, Bean had an affair with Hannah Rigret, a maid of his house, that resulted in the birth of a baby boy who would be named Felix Argyle. For unknown reasons, Felix was born a demi-human with cat ears and a tail. Because of the national stigma against demi-humans, Bean locked Felix in his basement as he feared rumors that the House of Argyle had sired a demi-human would ruin him.
Nine years later, Felix was discovered by Duke Meckart Karsten and his daughter Crusch Karsten. The cruelty perpetrated on Felix by his parents did not go unpunished, as the favor of the House of Karsten was officially revoked and the House of Argyle's prosperity and credibility both quickly declined. Seven years later, Bean brutally murdered his own wife in a fit of anger, an act that he instantly regretted.
Bean began working to revive his dead wife by experimenting on corpses provided by the criminal Miles. When he realised his water magic wasn't potent enough to resurrect his wife in a complete state, Bean sought to enlist the help of his estranged son Felix who had been living with the Karsten family since his discovery. To do so, Bean kidnapped Crusch Karsten, coercing Felix into helping him. Felix was able to revive his dead "mother," however, she instantly strangled her husband Bean to death out of anger.
Powers and Abilities[]
- The Sacrament of the Immortal King: Put simply, the Sacrament of the Immortal King was a powerful spell, which, when used to its fullest potential, could resurrect a person in their entirety. However, those who didn't have the potential to wield the power properly could only reanimate the corpses as mindless zombie-like existences. Even after persistent refinement, Bean could only create zombies. There didn't appear to be a limit to the amount of zombies he could create and command, as he had no issue reviving over two-hundred people simultaneously.
