I’ve got an idea how we can jog his memory. You know, remind him who his real friends are.
~ Bear Bratsky (Chapter 19, page 158)

Bear Bratsky and Aaron Hakimian are the main antagonists of the book Restart by the #1 New York Times bestselling author Gordon Korman published by Scholastic, Inc.

Biography[]

Before Chase’s Fall[]

Before Chase Ambrose fell off his roof and got amnesia, him, Bear, and Aaron were a team to be reckoned with. Champions on the field and in school, they terrorized all in their way. Although they picked on many, Joel Weber was their main target. They made life a living hell for Joel. Example; during an open house, in which Joel was playing the piano at, Chase, Bear, and Aaron placed cherry bombs in his piano. This incident caused Chase, Bear, and Aaron to be sentenced to community service at the The Portland Street Assisted Living Residence (AKA: The Graybeard Motel). In the book, Joel describes how he lived in constant fear and anxiety. The only place Joel felt truly safe from the trio of bullies was playing his piano and, after the cherry bomb incident, that was sabotaged too. They terrorized Joel so much, that his parents sent Joel to a boarding school for musical arts. This caused Shoshanna (Joel's twin sister) to develop a deep hatred for Bear. Aaron, and especially Chase.

After Chase's fall[]

After Chase fell off his roof and was diagnosed with acute-retrograde amnesia, he slowly started to realize how much of a horrible person he was. Bear and Aaron are shocked and appalled by how much Chase has changed. Chase now hangs out and has joined the video club, he started a video documentary with Mr. Soloway and Shoshanna for a video making contest, he's started hanging out with Shoshanna (who's convinced her parents the Chase has changed and to bring Joel back), and he's even started to hang out with Joel! The one kid whom him, Bear, and Aaron had terrorized so much that he had to move! Bear and Aaron try to fall asleep during an assembly until they find out it's to congratulate Chase and Shoshanna for winning the video making contest. Bear and Aaron are furious at seeing of the Chase and Shoshanna together because of the rivalry between the trio and the Webbers. Knowing Chase owes them something, they begin to devise a plan to “jog his memory”.

The Band room Attack[]

Brendan Espinoza and Kimberly Tooley are filming a video in the band room called “One Man Band”; A video in which Brendan will film himself playing different instruments to For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow and afterwards, edit it all together to make him look like a full band of one person. That’s when Bear and Aaron break in and wreck havoc. The spray both Brendan and Joel. Brendan fell down because of the sousaphone wrapped around him, and Joel fell down too. They did not attack Kimberly, however. They taunted Joel and Brendan to get Chase, which they sent Kimberly to do. After they found out that Joel was responsible for the instruments in the room, Bear and Aaron began to destroy everything! Sheet music, instruments, stands, everything! When Chase gets to the band room, Bear and Aaron claim it’s all Chase’s idea. They hand Chase a fire extinguisher, but he’s does nothing. When Bear tries to take it back, Chase resists, yanks it out of Bear’s hands, and accidentally hits Joel causing severe face injuries. Everyone is shocked and believes that Chase really was responsible.

Aftermath of the Attack[]

When Bear, Aaron and Chase are brought into the principal’s office, Bear and Aaron lie and pressure Chase to too. Feeling guilty, Chase gives in. Shoshanna is furious, believing Chase was faking his amnesia the whole time. Brendan is unsure. Chase is kicked out of the video club and Joel stops attending school.

The Medal’s retrieval and return[]

During a football practice, Chase gets mad at Bear and Aaron and says that he’s figured out they stole Mr. Soloway’s Medal of Honor. It’s then Bear and Aaron reveal the truth, they didn’t take the medal, Chase did. They also reveal that they planned for Chase to sell it and they would all split the fortune. Chase is devastated and regrets he ever met Bear and Aaron. Brendan meanwhile is trying to shoot a video when he discovers the footage from the band room incident, and it proves Chase’s innocence. Brendan immediately goes to show everyone to clear Chase’s name. Around the same time, Chase remembers what happened to the medal, he dropped it on the roof before he fell. Chase immediately takes the medal and heads to the motel to return it. When he gets there, Bear and Aaron try to stop him. Brendan tries to stop Bear but is punched in the chin. Bear then tries to hit Chases head with a vacuum cleaner but is unsuccessful. When Chase gets to Mr. Soloway, he returns the medal and confesses everything. Nurse Duncan, after overhearing, calls the police. Afterwards, Chase is arrested.

The Court Case[]

In the court case, Chase thinks he’s for sure done for and headed to juvenile hall. In the court, everyone claims he’s innocent because of his amnesia and how truly sorry he was. When the court asks Chase if he may go back to his old ways, Chase admits that he sadly can’t make any promises and the old Chase May comeback no matter how much he fights it. Just before the judge sentences Chase, Mr. Soloway comes in and claims that he loaned Chase the medal and it was all a misunderstanding. Chase then goes on and lives his new life with the past behind him and has become a good person.

The Aftermath of the Court Case[]

Bear and Aaron have become outcasts, each being each other’s only remaining friends. The other football players ignore them. They have finally been exposed for the delinquents they really are.

Quotes[]

Bear's eyes narrow. ‘Exactly how much do you remember about the Graybeard Motel?’

(CHASE: ‘Nothing,’ I reply honestly.) He grins. ‘If you want to go there when you don't have to, you didn't just scramble your brains. You knocked them out completely!’

~ Bear telling Chase about the Graybeard Motel after his fall. (Chapter 9, Page 71)
Hold your breath.
~ Bear’s sarcastic warning to Chase before they enter into the Graybeard Motel (Chapter 9, Page 72)
‘Great catch, Ambrose!’ Aaron bellows “Now you see how much the Hurricanes need you.”
~ Aaron trying to convince Chase to return to the football team (Chapter 14, Page 112)
‘First you come with us to community service when you don't even have to—that's bad enough! But now you're making a movie about the place?’

(CHASE: "It's for video club-) ‘And with Shoshanna Weber?" Aaron cuts me off. ‘Her stupid family got us sentenced to the Graybeard Motel!’ (CHASE: ‘Maybe I'm trying to make things right with her,’ I defend myself. "Maybe if I help her with her project, the family will be in more of a forgiving mood.’) “Yeah, that'll work," Aaron snorts. "Listen, man, you might not remember how much the Webers hate our guts, but I do. If it was up to them, we wouldn't be on community service; we'd be on death row. But, hey, it's all good. If you want to spend your time with people who curse the day you were born instead of your true friends -it's not like we can stop you."

~ Bear and Aaron arguing with Chase after catching him filming with Shoshanna and Mr. Soloway (Chapter 14, Page 114)
...It is the finding of this court that the three juveniles, Chase Matthew Ambrose, Aaron Joshua Hakimian, and Steven Beresford Bratsky, acted recklessly and with malice, not merely destroying property, but creating chaotic circumstances that could have endangered the public safety. Further, this is not an isolated incident; it is part of a pattern of intimidation and misbehavior toward others. Therefore, it is this court's decision that the aforementioned juveniles perform community service until such time as their caseworker concludes that this destructive behavior has been corrected…
~ Bear, Aaron, and Chase’s sentence for the cherry bomb incident (Chapter 18, Page 145)
When the announcement comes that there's an assembly, were all psyched. Why wouldn't we be? It's like a Get Our of fall free card for a whole morning of classes. What's the assembly about? Who knows? Who cares?

In the auditorium, the big screen is set up. That means they'll be turning the lights out. The perfect chance to catch a nap for a guy who was playing video games until three last night. Aaron is way ahead of me. He drapes himself into his seat, his legs dangling over the back of the chair in front of him, his arms spread out wide. I fight my way in beside him and we wrestle for position.

~ Bear discussing his and Aaron plans for the assembly (Chapter 19, Page 155)
Were not just going to worship the video; we're going to watch it -all forty minutes. Well, forget sleeping now. I'm too ticked off. Even Aaron is sitting bolt upright, staring in outrage at Ambrose and the Weber chick onstage.

The video starts. That's when my head really explodes. The thing is called Warrior, and it's about that geezer Solway, the meanest old Dumbledore in the entire Graybeard Motel! No wonder the two of them spent so much time with the guy.

~ Bear’s disgusted reaction to having to Chase and Shoshanna’s video project (Chapter 19, Page 156)
(CHASE: "What's going on?" he bellows.)

"Dude, what took you so long?" Aaron crows in unholy glee. "We had to send the chick to get you!" "This is your best idea yet," adds Bear. He hefts his fire extinguisher and hands it to Chase. "It's all yours, maestro!" Chase looks totally blown away. I can't read his expression—shocked? Or something else? "It's your plan," Aaron reminds him. "Bring it home!" Chase is a statue, eyes wide. Bear gets impatient. "Okay, I'll do it for you." He tries to take back the extinguisher, but Chase tightens his grip and holds on. There's a vicious tug-of-war for the extinguisher. With a mighty yank, Chase wrenches it out of Bear's grasp. It swings free--just as Joel rises from the floor where Aaron tossed him. With a thud, the heavy metal strikes Joel in the side of the face and he drops back down into the foam.

~ Chase and Bear’s struggle during the band room incident (Chapter 20, Page 165)
So you don’t remember. We didn’t jack that medal— you did”
~ Bear revealing that him and Aaron didn’t steal Mr. Soloway’s Medal of Honor, Chase did. (Chapter 23, Page 189)
Aaron steps forward. ‘Fine. You're better than us now.

You're a saint. But when you took that medal--that was the old you and the old rules. So it belongs to all three of us. You can't do anything without our okay, and we don't give it.’ He looks totally serious, like a lawyer reading a contract. ‘You make a move without us, you'll regret it,’ Bear adds threateningly.

~ Aaron and Bear warning Chase that he has to sell the medal and split the money or else (Chapter 23, Page 190)
Get him!
~ Bear and Aaron’s last line in the book; Yelling at each other to go after Chase and stop him from returning the Medal of Honor to Mr. Soloway (Chapter 27, Page 218)
