Beathán is the secondary antagonist of the one-shot comic book Van Helsing: From Beneath the Rue Morgue. He is a monster created by Dr. Moreau.
History[]
Beathán was created by Moreau when he ripped the heart out of an innocent man and fused it with the DNA of an Amazon toad called Bufo Marinus. The poor monster still had his human consciousness inside but was powerless to stop himself from his own animalistic instincts. He was later injected with an invisibility serum and managed to escape.
The creature then came to connect with his wife and daughter, however his animal instincts take him over and he murders his daughter when she reacts in fear to his arrival. However before he killed his wife, she used her psychic powers to contact Van Helsing. Van Helsing arrives but is too late, as the creature throws her out the window. Helsing tracks the monster down to Moreau's lab.
After he's done feeding the beast he unleashes it onto Van Helsing who injects it with the antidote, rendering it visible again. The ghost of the monster's deceased wife reveals the monster's background and begs Van Helsing to help him. However, Helsing is more interested in catching Dr. Moreau. The beast releases the other monsters, but Moreau drowns his lab, killing them all to escape. Helsing and Beathán manage to survive, but Helsing is unable to track the beast down before he escapes.
Trivia[]
- The creature seems to be inspired by two Universal Monsters, being The Invisible Man and the Gill-man.
