“ | There are too many of them to fight. They are all around me, staring with their dead and hungry eyes, like ghouls around a corpse. The leaders of the gang walk through the press of bodies. Looks like they've got first dibs on taking me apart with their bare hands. | „ |
~ Mr. Action while surrounded by the gangsters, preparing to face their leaders. |
Bebop and Rocksteady, also known as the Leaders of the Gang, are the minor antagonists from the 2008 stand-alone total conversion Doom mod Action Doom 2: Urban Brawl. As their alias implies, they're both in charge of the local gang of thugs hunting down Mr. Action throughout the game.
Biography[]
Whether the protagonist finds out about Phylex through Jerry Marconi or chooses to refuse his "help" and look for a piece of the trail without anyone's assistance, both decisions lead him to the subway regardless. At the bottom of the stairs the hero's ambushed by two gangsters hiding in the shadows, who are then followed by the ones occupying the subway bathrooms. He passes through the turnstiles and is greeted by the train waiting area, with its walls defaced by the gang graffiti and floors littered with garbage and chalk body outlines of the thugs' latest victims. He takes care of every criminal in the waiting area and boards the train, where the passengers have already murdered the transit cop and are eager to hinder Mr. Action's investigation. Once every offender is snuffed out and the hero reaches the train's last cabin, it stops at an unnamed station densely populated by the thugs, who surround Mr. Action, but are hesitant to attack him. Instead, their two leaders push through the press of bodies, intending to tear him apart personally, while their minions form a circle to prevent the hero from getting away, thus making the fight inevitable.
Whereas other boss battles present defeat as the end of the line for the protagonist and victory, as the only mean of advancing the story, this confrontation isn't as simple as it seems, since his reaction to beating the life out of the gang leaders depends on his previous choice made during the encounter with Marconi, while giving in to the gangsters' onslaught opens up a radically different set of opportunities, including a new sinister foe and additional allies, one of whom is able to point the hero in the direction of his ultimate goal.
Thus, if Marconi has already informed the hero about Phylex, the fight with Bebop and Rocksteady culminates in the leaders crumpling to the floor in a bloody heap and the rest of the gangsters being scared off by the police sirens rapidly approaching the scene, which allows the hero to walk out of the subway and enter the Phylex headquarters.
A much more grim conclusion awaits the player if they've chosen to descend the subway without Marconi's tip, making the victory over the gang leaders pointless, as the exhausted Mr. Action collapses to his knees, realizing that without a direction he has no chance of locating his daughter, and chooses to accept his death at the hands of an armed thug, hoping to reunite with her in the afterlife.
The defeat always concludes with the hero being severely pummeled by the thugs, who then decide to throw the unconscious hero near the trash cans in an alley, where he's picked up by a kind-hearted woman and is nursed back to health in her apartment, which is the start of a whole another side story.
Appearance[]
Bebop is a burly, dark-skinned male in his mid to late twenties. He's slightly taller than the common "muscular" enemy type and wears his violet-dyed hair in a tomahawk. He wears an unbuttoned red sleeveless jacket on a bare torso, necklace with a skull medallion, studded leather bracelets, violet sunglasses with narrow lenses, black pants with a chain fashioned as a belt, red and white sneakers and has a metal nose piercing.
Rocksteady is an obese, Caucasian male in his mid twenties. He wears a vintage pilot hat with goggles, yellow sleeveless shirt with an exposed abdomen, over the shoulder bullet belt, camouflage pants and brown shoes. He appears to have two little tusks sticking of the lower part of his mouth, which are either real or decorative.
Personality[]
Not much is known about the couple, apart from the fact that they are apparently engaged in all sorts of petty criminal activities usually carried out through their followers, such as vandalism, theft and assault, which is evident from an abundance of gang-related graffiti and the damaged property all over the city and the thugs' overall hostile attitude, with the hero's beginning remarks suggesting that they frequently rob anyone unfortunate enough to run into them during the night.
It's also implied that the duo has no qualms resorting to murder, considering their minions' eagerness to kill the protagonist and the numerous chalk body outlines on the streets and in the subway, making their decision to simply beat up the hero and throw him out in case he loses quite bizarre, though it may be explained by the police arriving too soon for them to finish him off. Moreover, the gang members coming out for Mr. Action's blood all at once and uniting their efforts to hunt him down specifically is later confirmed to have been the result of Peter Crisp somehow convincing the leaders to get rid of the protagonist.
Despite everything listed above, the leaders still have some sense of honor, deciding to take on Mr. Action without the assistance of their henchmen, only instructing them to surround the hero to hinder his escape.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Fighting skills: While the duo doesn't appear to deal any more damage compared to their regular ("fat" and "muscular" enemy types) counterparts, the hero faces off against both of them simultaneously, giving them the ability to corner him easily.
- Durability: Bebop and Rocksteady can take a bit more punishment than their regular corresponding enemy types.
