Becky McDonald (nee Granger) is a fictional character and major protagonist of the ITV British soap opera Coronation Street.
Despite Becky's flawed personality, she would be loyal to her friends and her tough and no nonsense behaviour came to good use when sticking by their side and helping them through difficult situations. She also had a sister named Kylie Platt, who passed away in 2016.
She was played by Katherine Kelly.
Overview[]
Although a flawed character, Becky was initially depicted as an antagonistic individual in 2006; an anti-hero in 2008; a protagonist from 2009-2010' and a protagonist villain throughout 2011. She was redeemed for her exit storyline at the beginning of 2012.
Biography[]
Becky was born in 1980 in a rough estate and to a drug addicted mother. She was followed by a sister Kylie seven years later. In her teenage years she left the family home and would fall into drug addiction and troubles when growing up, and also dated an addict named Slug. By 2005 a 25 year old Becky was living on the streets and begging for money.
In 2006 she crossed paths with her friend Kelly Crabtree at a police station, and a sympathetic Kelly took Becky in, much to the disapproval of Kelly's boyfriend Lloyd Mullaney. But their relationship soured when Becky stitched her up for theft at Kelly's workplace Underworld. Becky attached herself to the Weatherfield community, and was taken under the wing of kindly café owners Roy and Hayley Cropper, who began to see Becky as a surrogate. But Becky betrayed her trust after her and Slug stoke the Croppers car and went for a joyride. Although the Croppers felt betrayed, they eventually forgave Becky and continued to let her stay with them and work in the café, where Becky began to drop her criminal background.
In 2008 she began dating Jason Grimshaw, although he dumped Becky when finding out that his estranged wife Sarah maybe returning to Weatherfield to reconcile. Becky suffered an emotional breakdown and began drinking alcohol and going on a spree destroying property. Her enemy DC Hooch looked into the case although Becky's friend and boss Steve McDonald testified in court she spent time with him, thus committing perjury. Becky was let off and she grew close to Steve due to their working relationship at his pub the Rovers Return, and they began an affair, despite Steve already being with Michelle Connor. Becky got sick of waiting for Steve and got back with Jason, and they got engaged. Steve eventually broke off with Michelle and got together with Becky, with them planning to get married.
The wedding was due to take place in the spring of 2009, but Becky got drunk on the day due to nerves and couldn't attend. She remained with Steve, and grew close to his young daughter Amy and protected the child from school bullies by warning them off. The bullying was due to Amy's mother Tracy Barlow being in prison for murder, and Becky told the girl the truth and forced Steve to finally be honest with his daughter.
Becky and Steve eventually married in the summer of 2009, with his family back to attend. But the wedding reception was a disaster as Slug had returned and planted drugs on the premises of the Rovers under the orders of DC Hooch, and Becky got arrested during a sting operation and charged with possession. Steve and Lloyd tracked down and abducted Slug and Becky threatened him to confess the truth and turn against DC Hooch, who was blackmailing Slug with a possible prison sentence. Slug stood up to his former boss and threatened to testify against his corruption, causing Hooch to get cold feet and drop the charges.
Becky became pregnant at the start of 2010, although she lost the baby. Not able to adopt due to her criminal past, she wanted to adopt Amy, but Tracy (who was still in prison at the time) forbid it. Becky later reconciled with her sister Kylie and found out she had a little boy named Max, who Becky grew attached to. Kylie later sold Max to Becky and Steve for a large sum of money, before fleeing Weatherfield. In December 2010, Kylie returned to blackmail Becky for more money in order to keep Max. Becky was left without hope due to lack of funds. When a tram crashed into Coronation Street, Becky helped alert authorities to Sunita Alahan, who was trapped round the back of the corner shop. After Sunita was taken away, a desperate Becky returned to the ruins of the shop and stole the money from the safe, and used it to pay off Kylie and sent her packing.
A couple of weeks after the tram crash on Christmas Eve, Tracy returned to Weatherfield after being released early from prison due to appealing the murder case. Becky kept her cool around Tracy, although took delight in witnessing Gail attacking Tracy in the pub. But Tracy got the upper hand when she found out from Amy that Becky and Steve had illegally "purchased" Max, and took Amy away from them. After Tracy was attacked on New Year's Eve night, she claimed Becky was responsible, even though the culprit was Claire Peacock. Claire confessed to the police that she was responsible and Becky helped her friend escape the country to avoid being prosecuted, much to Tracy's frustration.
Similar to what she had done to Steve's previous wife Karen McDonald, Tracy plotted to split Becky and Steve up so she could have Steve to herself. Tracy wormed her way into their lives and grew close to Steve, causing Becky to become unnerved. To make matters worse, Kylie returned to the area and married neighbour David Platt, the latter whom wanted custody of Max. When social services were tipped to Becky's purchase of Max, Becky believed Tracy was responsible and smashed down the Barlows door with a sledgehammer and chased Tracy into the living room, preparing to kill her. Steve intervened and revealed that he was responsible for the tip off, so he could stop Tracy having a hold over them with the information and keeping Amy to herself. Betrayed, Becky packed her bags, spat in Steve's face and left him.
