In America, people like you follow, they don't lead... If you're not happy, then go back to Asia; this has been our land for generations, what do you people want from us?
~ Becky affirming her white supremacy and questioning Yonah for being in America.

Becky Walters is a minor antagonist in the 2019 film, Ip Man 4: The Finale, the fourth and final installment in the Ip Man film series. She is a xenophobic student from Sullivan High School who is jealous of Yonah Wan for becoming leader of her cheerleading squad.

She was portrayed by Grace Englert.

Biography[]

During a cheerleading practice Yonah changed the cheerleading squad routine by performing an unorthodox stunt by flipping on top of the human pyramid instead of standing up. Yonah received praise and the cheerleading coach made her leader. Becky strongly disapproves this as breaking routine, but the coach was open to change and she accepted her stunt as part of the roster. Becky confronted Yonah at the school yard hurling racial slurs and demanding her to "go back to Asia" while claiming the US as her land for generations and degrading Chinese-Americans as being mere servants for the white race. Yonah fired back by calling her "stupid blonde" and "pale face" for her racism, and for leaving out the facts that her ancestors stole land from Native Americans and that America always had immigrants. Offended by her resistance, Becky rallied a gang of field hockey boys to assault her. Yonah tried to run, but Becky and her gang caught up to her and cut her hair forcing her to defend herself with her Tai Chi causing Becky to cut herself on the left cheek with her own scissors in the process. Ip Man intervened and fought her off and her gang with ease and escorted Yonah home.

But this did not stop her, Becky returned home crying to her parents. She then lies to her dad about Yonah bullying her and cutting her face as a second attempt at revenge. Andrew reopened the case of the Chinese Benevolent Association's alleged involvement with illegal immigration of Chinese migrants, and raided their headquarters to successfully detain Master Wan but failed to detain the other Kung-fu masters. But after the events of the film, Wan Zhonghua and the other masters were found innocent, cleared of all charges, and the case is closed once again leaving her second attempt at revenge somewhat in vain.

It's unknown what happened to Becky after, but she may have gotten expelled & punished by her parents for what she did.

Personality[]

You think you could beat me? You could never beat me!
~ Becky Walters attacking Yonah with her hockey gang to prove her point.

Becky Walters is a xenophobic high school bully who never stops until she gets what she wants. She sees Chinese-Americans as a threat to her high school status and her perceived American values and cheerleading routines. Therefore, she is considered both a stereotypical popular school girl and a mean girl.

She has an intense rivalry with Yonah who expresses jealousy towards her over her cheerleading coach's decision to make the latter leader of the cheerleading squad instead of her. She takes pride in American values seriously and sees anyone trying to change them as a threat. As such, she can be easily offended when Yonah corrects her warped values and defies her openly racist attitude. She is shown to be cowardly when asking others to help her do her dirty work and runs away when Ip Man turned the odds against her.

It is revealed she lives in a wealthy neighborhood where she exhibits her spoiled attitude by lying to Andrew Walters and used his position as an immigration officer to continue to get back at Yonah (it is unknown if she also exaggerated the events surrounding Becky and Yonah). It is also likely she inherited his racist views therefore becoming the racist bully she is. Her second revenge was somewhat successful because through Andrew she inflicted emotional pain and suffering to Yonah by taking her father and the masters away and make her beg for her father's innocence and apologizing for her actions at school (when in fact her actions were right).

Trivia[]

  • The name Becky is also a pejorative epithet that emerged in 2016 that refers to a white woman who is ignorant of her privileges and prejudices.
  • Although Becky Walters is an American, like Scott Adkins who played Barton Geddes, the actor who plays her, Grace Englert, is British.
  • When she said Yonah couldn't defeat her, it's somehow a reference to Morro's line to Lloyd "You think you're better than me? No one is better than me!"in the 54th episode of Ninjago, Curseworld, Part II.
  • She may share a few similarities with Taffyta Muttonfudge from Wreck-It Ralph (2012): Both have blonde hair and are nemesis to their rivals. (Becky to Yonah; Taffyta to Vanellope.) Both also have the word "leader" in their identities. However, they still have differences.
    • Becky is born to Andrew and Gabrielle, while Taffyta is adopted by Felix and Calhoun.
    • Becky is a cheerleader, while Taffyta is the leader of the racers.
    • Unlike Becky, Taffyta does not show any sign of racism. She is pure mean.
