Love is hatred... all those whom you love... shall perish.
~ Satan in Beelzebub's dream.
It could have been anyone. I just happened to come across the perfect vessel. I simply wanted to see what kind of flower would bloom in that beautiful soil. That is all. It could have been anyone.
~ Beelzebub, talking about his experiments on Hajun and Zerofuku.

Beelzebub, also known as his second personality Satan, is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Loki) of the manga/anime series Record of Ragnarok.

He is the overarching antagonist of the Sixth Round, a major antagonist in the Seventh Round, the main antagonist of the Eighth Round (with Satan as the main antagonist of Beelzebub's first Flashback during the Eighth Round) and a major character in the Tenth Round of the Ragnarok Tournament.

Beelzebub is a God belonging to the Abrahamic Pantheon who, after discovering that Satan is inside him, began to research to find a way to die, making himself responsible for the return of Hajun and the death of Zerofuku. He is also the Gods' representative of the Gods Fighters during the Eighth Round, where he faces Nikola Tesla as the Humans' representative of the Einherjar.

He is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa, who has also voiced Hisoka Morow in Hunter × Hunter, Ulquiorra Cifer in Bleach, Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki in Naruto, Kishou Arima in Tokyo Ghoul, Jellal Fernandes in Fairy Tail, Walter C. Dornez in Hellsing Ultimate, Dr. Genus in One-Punch Man, Rock in Black Lagoon, Dix Perdix in Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, Don Armage in Uchu Sentai Kyuranger, Yoshiuo Minamoto in My Bride Is a Mermaid, Absolute Hades God N Ma in Mahō Sentai Magiranger and Mikhail in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, in the Japanese dubbed version of the anime adaptation. He is voiced by Brandon McInnis in the English dub.

Appearance[]

Beelzebub is a relatively short but lean and slender God with extremely pale skin, messy black hair, brown eyes with black bags, as well as pointy ears. Normally, he is dressed like a priest, wearing long black cassock with purple cross-patterned sashes on the shoulders, black leggings and black mid-calf boots. In flashbacks, he is shown wearing a black cape with stand-up collar, white dress shirt, as well as the same leggings and boots he wears normally.

Whenever he was possessed by Satan, his eyes would develop a black sclera (similar to that of Zeus and Thor), while his nails became razor-sharp. During his fight with Hades, he was shirtless with long torn cape.

Personality[]

Beelzebub is calm, apathetic, ruthless and introverted individual with little regard for life, his own or others'. He experiments on other beings and creatures without a shred of remorse or guilt, showing no fear before Odin when confronted about his actions, but rather becoming curious about his words, and investigating thoroughly until discovering his true intentions.

Due to Satan's Curse, also known as Demonic Destrudo, which makes him kill anyone he falls in love with, Beelzebub possesses deep desire to die, as horrifically and brutally as possible, and has attempted multiple times to end himself, even breeding genetically-modified monsters to kill him. However, because of Lilith's Mark, which he regards as a "curse", the Lord of Flies remains immortal, even if he deliberately allows himself to be killed by his opponents.

Despite calling him "troublesome", Beelzebub is actually very loyal to Hades and has worked with him for years. When tasked with bringing Adamas back to life after he was gravely injured by Poseidon, Lord of Flies turned him into a cyborg and successfully saved him, granting him immunity to physical pain. When King of Helheim perished, Beelzebub decided to participate in Ragnarok to ensure eradication of Humanity, a species he previously had no interest in. He also appears to tolerate Hermes' presence.

In combat, Beelzebub is focused and strategic, constantly adapting to Nikola Tesla's tactics. Initially, he did not perceive Tesla as much of a threat, coldly remarking his optimistic threats with death threats, casually dodging his attacks and refraining from using force-fields, as they damage his own body. When scientist used his Tesla Warp ability to teleport behind him, Beelzebub was able to quickly and correctly figure out the rules for this attack, the fact that Tesla can use it thrice at max and only inside Gematria Zone.

Even so, Beelzebub ultimately came to respect the scientist, given that he forced him to use his Chaos technique, which was branded as taboo in Helheim and it pushed Beelzebub to his limits. When cheered by Gods' audience after killing Tesla, Beelzebub noticed how similar Humans and Gods are, and how the tables have turned.

Biography[]

Beelzebub, a God who lives in Valhalla, is regarded as Anathema (One Cursed by Satan) and ostracized by everyone and sent away because everyone is convinced that he has been cursed by Satan and anyone close to him will come to a bad end. One day three Angels, namely Lucifer, Azazel and Samael, approach him and decide to befriend him, not believing Satan's story, and if Beelzebub initially pushes them away, he eventually becomes friends with us. However, one morning Beelzebub wakes up to find Lucifer, Azazel and Samael dead, and realizing that it was Satan who killed them he swears revenge against him, starting to study texts related to Satan and looking for a way to track him down. During his search, Beelzebub discovers a book that reveals the existence of the Primordial Gods and that Odin intends to sacrifice his body to bring them back to life.

One day the Goddess Lilith, Lucifer's childhood friend, discovers that Beelzebub has something to do with his death and decides to join his search for Satan, forcing him to make her come with him. The two begin a long journey in search of Satan, and thus end up making friends and falling in love, however because of this Satan awakens in Beelzebub and kills Lilith, making Beelzebub understand that Satan has always been in him and that he is activated every time his love for someone reaches the maximum to kill the loved one. Lilith, before dying, forgives Beelzebub and casts a spell on him to push him to continue living, but Beelzebub on the contrary decides that he wants to die.

Because of this, Beelzebub goes on a suicide mission in Helheim and reaches the castle of Hades, where after defeating his guards he challenges the God to a duel, begging him to kill him. Hades wins the battle, but, when he understands that Lilith's spell prevents Beelzebub from dying even through suicide, he warns Beelzebub that Lilith wants him to continue to live and not die, thus inviting him to pause for reflection. In the end, Beelzebub returns to Hades and warns him that he still intends to die, but this time he wants to live a miserable and disgusting life in order to die in the most brutal and cruel way possible. Hades, impressed by his way of acting, gives him the Staff of Apomyius to better channel his powers.

After this, Beelzebub started working as a surgeon in Valhalla and, at Hades' request, saves the life of his brother Adamas, mortally wounded by Poseidon after attempting a coup against Zeus, turning him into a Cyborg. During the operation, Adamas criticizes Beelzebub's desire to create something that can kill him, which leads an annoyed Beelzebub to give him a flashy Cyborg body during the operation, however Adamas ends up liking it. From that moment, Adamas begins to live in Helheim under the name chosen by Hades Adamantine. Soon after, Beelzebub sends Hermes to warn Poseidon that Adamas is still alive, and Poseidon decides not to kill him so as not to displease Hades.

Without knowledge of other Gods, Beelzebub collects the remains of Hajun, the Demon Lord of the Sixth Heaven who had almost destroyed Helheim millennia before, and after transforming it into a seed inserts it into the body of Zerofuku, in the hope that he will transform into the aforementioned Demon and manage to kill him.

Millennia later, following the proclamation of the Ragnarok Tournament, Beelzebub is chosen by Zeus as one of the Gods Fighters to represent the Gods during the competition. Beelzebub hopes to meet his death during the Tournament.

In the Sixth Round Zerofuku, who is facing Buddha who fights for Humans having betrayed the Gods, is possessed by Hajun and Beelzebub becomes fascinated by the results of his experiments. In the end, however, Buddha manages to defeat and kill Hajun and Beelzebub burns all his research related to the Demon branding it as failure. Soon after, he is joined by Odin who, having discovered that he was the one who called Hajun back into the arena, scolds him saying never to interfere again in the Ragnarok Tournament, words that Beelzebub finds interesting.

During the Seventh Round, Beelzebub performs an experiment with a creature created by him, but when he realizes that he cannot kill it, he brands it a failure. Reached by Adamas, which kills the creature, Beelzebub explains to him that he brought Hajun back in the futile hope that he could kill him, and that he is not following the Seventh Round because he is certain that Hades will defeat Qin Shi Huang without any doubt. At the end of the Seventh Round, after Hades was defeated and killed by Qin Shi Huang, Beelzebub saves Brunhilde and Göll from Adamas, who wanted to take revenge on them for Hades' death, claiming that it is not what his brother wanted, but at the same time he threatens the two Valkyries warning them that many Gods still want to exterminate Humanity.

Later, Beelzebub goes to Hermes and asks him to warn Zeus that he will fight in the Eighth Round: after seeing Hades killed by Qin Shi Huang, he wants to avenge him by exterminating Humanity. Beelzebub, representing the Gods, faces Nikola Tesla, representing Humans, and during the fight he remains fascinated by Tesla's technology, at the same time wanting to continue fighting to avenge Hades and exterminate Humanity. In the end, despite taking so much damage that Lilith's spell tries in vain to stop him from continuing to fight, Beelzebub manages to defeat and kill his opponent, even if thanks to Tesla's personality Beelzebub, also hearing how the Gods changed their minds about him after his victory and now respect him, understands that he, Humans and Gods are not so different after all.

Shortly before the start of the Tenth Round, Beelzebub comes to the defense of Buddha, who has stopped Odin to question him about why he imprisoned Siegfried in Tartarus, and parries a blow from the Norse God that was aimed at attacking Buddha, after which Beelzebub reveals that Odin's wish is to resurrect the Primordial Gods by sacrificing his body. This does not scare Odin who attacks both, but Thor immediately intervenes and explains to the three not to dishonor the dead in the Ragnarok Tournament with fights outside the ring and to let the Tournament decide who he must live and he must die there. Beelzebub doesn't agree, but the subsequent intervention of Sakata Kintoki and Adamas, who tells Beelzebub not to dishonor Hades with his actions, convinces Beelzebub to desist. As soon as Odin, Thor and Huginn & Muninn are gone, Beelzebub reveals to Buddha what he did to Zerofuku hoping he will kill him, but Buddha expresses no hate towards him so as not to dishonor Zerofuku's memory.

Powers and Abilities[]

Divine Physiology: As a Valhalla-born God, Beelzebub possesses standard traits of his species, such as biological immortality and superhuman physical characteristics, making him vastly superior to non-Einherjar Humans, Demons, Angels, Giants and Demigods. He also appears to be one of the most powerful Gods in the universe, as even several lower-ranking Gods dreaded his power and trembled in fear upon his arrival on the arena. As a God, Beelzebub is unable to die of old age and his body cannot be harmed by deadly weapons. However, he can be injured and killed by physical attacks with superhuman strength or by Divine Weapons.

Seismokinesis: Beelzebub is able to create, control and amplify high-frequency vibrations, a mechanical phenomenon whereby oscillations occur about an equilibrium point. Depending on whichever hand he is holding the Staff of Apomyius, he can either utilize those vibrations for offense (right) or defense (left). If tries to use both at the same time, he will initiate the technique known as Original Sin of the Netherworld – No.0: Chaos, branded as a taboo in Helheim, which would result in a massive explosion in a form of black sphere that would engulf both him and his opponent, before bursting and leaving his opponent dead and him injured.

Vibrokinetic Cutting: His primary means of attack consists of Palmyra, during which he projects amplified vibrations as a seismic waves in specific direction, causing powerful earthquakes or focus them at narrow point to cut through solid matter, even steel. By repeatedly thrusting forward with the Staff of Apomyius, he is able to create an incoming storm of projectiles, capable of obliterating Nikola Tesla's Gematria Zone. He can also pierce through opponent's chest by using his right index and middle fingers, before amplifying vibrations to extend ultrasonic cutter to pierce their heart.

Vibrokinetic Force-Field: Using the Staff of Apomyius in his left hand, Beelzebub can generate and project a nigh-indestructible force-field made out of vibrations, commonly known as The Gates of Hell. It was shown to successfully repel a prolonged assault from Nikola Tesla's Plasma Jet Punches and at one point, even stated to be able to block Thor's Mjölnir. The downside of this technique is that its prolonged usage puts a stain on Beelzebub's body, damaging him in the process.

Divine Condition: Despite preferring long-range combat, Beelzebub possesses superhuman strength, durability, speed, agility, jumping, stamina and endurance. Even before he mastered ability to amplify vibrations, he was easily able to slaughter Angels and hordes of Helheim's Demons with pure physical strength, punching clear through their bodies. He was able to withstand being pummeled through castle's walls by Hades and fall from great height, as well as point-blank Chaos detonation while remaining conscious. Even without force-fields, Lord of Flies proved to be extremely difficult to hit, being able to casually react and jump away from Tesla's attacks, even reacting to Tesla Warp.

Genius Intellect: Beelzebub is a very intelligent individual. He has read a variety of books on demonology, such as "Folklore and its Connection to Demons" and "Valhalla and Hellheim", and can also apply his intelligence in combat by analyzing his opponent's techniques and discovering their weakness, to the point of being able to spot the features of the Tesla Warp after seeing them only once. Beelzebub is also shown to be an extremely skilled scientist, particularly in the field of biology, having an entire laboratory in his room to experiment on a plethora of creatures and monsters. Thanks to his scientific experiments, Beelzebub was able to reproduce the seed of the deceased Hajun, which he used on Zerofuku: a few millennia later, during the Sixth Round of Ragnarok, this seed took over Zerofuku's body, completely devouring him and allowing Hajun to resurrect. Beelzebub is also a very skilled doctor. Under Hades' orders, he was able to heal Adamas by performing surgery on his body, which had sustained life-threatening injuries. During this process, more organs and limbs had to be replaced with machinery, meaning that Beelzebub also has some degree of technological knowledge and is able to use that knowledge in his medical and scientific operations.

Demonic Destrudo and Lilith's Mark: Since his birth, Beelzebub was thought to have been cursed by Satan. The common rumor around him was that any God who tried to get close to him would be struck with bad luck and their hearts destroyed by Satan. In reality, when Beelzebub's love reaches its peak, Satan comes and destroys what he loves. When this happens, Beelzebub loses consciousness and undergoes a change: his hands become like claws and the whites of his eyes turn black with white pupils. While in this state, Beelzebub uncontrollably rips the hearts of the people he loves with his claws. Precisely for this reason, upon her death, Lilith transfers the rose tattoo found on the left side of her face onto Beelzebub's chest. It contains a spell: whenever Beelzebub tries to kill himself or tries to let others kill him, the tattoo won't let him. For example, if Beelzebub tries to stab himself the tattoo causes vines to sprout under his skin and creates a hand that holds back Beelzebub's arm. He initially believed the tattoo was a curse Lilith bestowed on him as he mistakenly believed she wanted him to continue to suffer while alive, but upon his meeting with Hades he was told that the tattoo was not a curse, but rather a prayer, so that Beelzebub would continue to live, for his sake and for the sake of his friends.

Trivia[]

  • In theology, Beelzebub is another name for Satan and one of Seven Deadly Demons, representing gluttony and envy. According to the stories of the 16th-century occultist Johann Weyer, Beelzebub led a successful revolt against the Devil, is the chief lieutenant of Lucifer, the Emperor of Hell, and presides over the Order of the Fly. This is referenced in Record of Ragnarok by having Beelzebub kill Lucifer.
  • His medical skills are reference to his portrayal in the New Testament, where the scribes accused Jesus Christ of exorcising Demons by the power of Beelzebul.
  • A lightning was said to have fell down from the heavens and burn everything around him to a crisp when Beelzebub was born.
