Abner Jenkins, better known as the Beetle or Mach-IV, is a major antagonist in Ultimate Spider-Man and a supporting antagonist turned anti-hero in the third season of Avengers Assemble.
He is a criminal mercenary who uses a high-tech beetle-themed costume equipped with an array of deadly weapons to carry out his assigned tasks. During his supervillain career Beetle has been a part of Doctor Octopus' Sinister Six and Baron Zemo's Masters of Evil at one point or another before choosing a heroic path as Mach-IV.
In Ultimate Spider-Man he's voiced by Steven Blum, who also voiced Green Goblin and Chameleon in The Spectacular Spider-Man, Red Skull in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Count Vertigo in Young Justice, Amon in The Legend of Korra, Jindiao in Kung Fu Panda: Paws of Destiny, Starscream in Transformers Prime, Makucha in The Lion Guard, Vilgax and Zs'Skayr in the Ben 10 franchise, and Darkseid in Justice League: War.
At an unknown point in the past, Beetle met his first defeat at hands of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson, becoming his archenemy.
Ultimate Spider-Man[]
Beetle Mania[]
Beetle targets the Daily Bugle Communications for J. Jonah Jameson's campaign that exposes the mercenary's criminal dealings with various supervillains (i.e. springing MODOK from prison and dealings with Doctor Doom). When he fights the S.H.I.E.L.D. trainees, Beetle's assassination attempt is stopped by Spider-Man and he is knocked out by Power Man; Jameson was on monitor renderings the whole time unlike Mary Jane Watson actually being in the office.
The Attack of the Beetle[]
Beetle is shown having a penchant for holding grudges against Spider-Man for their previous encounter as well as Phil Coulson for being 'sparring partners'. During his first fight with the two, Beetle decides to use May Parker as a hostage. While May manages to escape, Beetle is eventually beaten by Spider-Man and Coulson (with help from May).
Hawkeye[]
Beetle went to destroy the new S.H.I.E.L.D. Tri-Carrier but is defeated and captured by Spider-Man and Hawkeye.
The Sinister Six[]
Beetle appeared as a member of the Sinister Six alongside Doctor Octopus, Electro, the Rhino, Kraven the Hunter and the Lizard. Along with the group, he fought Spider-Man. When the trainees arrive, Beetle fights with Nova but is defeated by Iron Fist after Spider-Man's teammates switch opponents and is later detained in S.H.I.E.L.D. custody.
Agent Venom[]
Beetle is hired by Taskmaster to obtain a sample of the Venom symbiote. Failing with the Venomized Scorpion, he chases after Flash Thompson, ignoring Harry Osborn and Mary Jane in the process. Beetle subsequently had to fight with Spider-Man and then Agent Venom. While Spider-Man deals with Taskmaster, Beetle is eventually defeated by Agent Venom.
New Warriors[]
Beetle is among the escaped supervillains along with Doctor Octopus, the Scorpion and the Green Goblin during a showdown between Taskmaster's team and the New Warriors. Along with his fellow supervillains, Beetle is eventually defeated by the New Warriors.
Contest of Champions, Pt. 1[]
Beetle - alongside the Abomination and the Executioner - are sent by the Grandmaster to obtain Spider-Man for the contest against the Collector.
Anti-Venom[]
Beetle attempts to steal a truck only to be attacked by Spider-Man and Agent Venom in order to defeat possible Sinister Six recruits. However, HYDRA agents had previously upgraded Beetle's armor, allowing him to fight off the duo until the Patrioteer hacks Beetle's armor and sends Beetle crashing into the pavement.
Avengers: Ultron Revolution[]
Beetle went on to join the Masters of Evil along with Goliath, Screaming Mimi, Fixer and Moonstone. Together, the villains suffered one defeat after another at the hands of the Avengers until they joined forces with Baron Zemo, who became their new leader.
They then masqueraded as the new Thunderbolts, with Beetle becoming the hero "Mach-IV" until he and the rest of the team realized they liked doing good for a change and Zemo only cared about himself, so he teamed up with the Avengers and stop Zemo before turning himself in, now reformed.
Powers and Abilities[]
Beetle Armor: Beetle possesses an armored high-tech suit that resembles a beetle which rivals Iron Man's armor. It has the unusually large amount of fold-out rocket launchers hidden all over the surface of his armor.
Superhuman Strength: The Beetle has enough superhuman strength to overpower Spider-man and his team. He was able to throw Spider-man though some walls in a restaurant and is strong enough to easily break through multiple layers of solid concrete.
Superhuman Mobility: He is still able to perform acrobatic maneuvers, despite him donning a bulky high-tech armor. His speed is such that he took downs a few S.H.I.E.L.D. agents within a few seconds, even though he was in camouflage mode at the time.
Superhuman Durability: His armor is incredibly durable. He is impervious to ballistic laser attacks. He was very resilient to physical attack from Spider-man, due to his armored hide.
Weapons Systems: His armored suit has many hidden weapons system, which makes him intimidate any foe he faces.
Fold-out rocket launchers
Energy beam gauntlets
Lasers
Missiles
Heat-seeking missiles
Flight: He has a jet-propulsion system on his suit, which he uses for levitation or high-speed flying.
Camouflage: He has been seen using camouflage mode while attacking the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in the Tri-carrier development site as well as used it to aid in his escape.
Retractable Blades: He has shown retractable blades while going toe-to-toe with Phil Coulson. He even has them on his wrists, which he has used many times to attack Spider-man, or cut off his webbing.
Abilities[]
Hand-to-Hand Combat: He is seen going toe-to-toe with Phil Coulson, one of the best combatants in the world while rivaling his every move.
Genius Level Intelligence: He was able to create his advanced armor as well as many of his gadgetry.
Maximum Human Conditioning: Despite him utilizing an armored suit, he has shown to be in top physical condition, in terms of strength, speed, agility, physical functions & senses.
Guerrilla Warfare: He has shown himself to be a trained guerilla fighter. During the attack on the Daily Bugle, despite him being a super-mercenary and having the means to overpower all of the heroes in the building, he still resorted to using manipulation & stealth takedowns on the young heroes.
