Kato: This is the priceless cargo we're transporting. Beautiful, don't you think?
Huey: So long as you admire it from a distance. Even the most exquisite rose, handled without care, will bleed you with its thorns. And this particular rose has two massive ones, in case you haven't noticed.

The Behemoth is the secondary antagonist of the Distant Future chapter of Live A Live. It's an alien beast that is delivered to Earth for military experiments, with the crew of Cogito Ergo Sum being entrusted with delivering the creature. However, it escapes due to OD-10's interference and ends up hunting for the crewmembers.

Biography[]

The Behemoth was an alien animal from another planet. The Earth's military took interest in it and wanted to study it more thoroughly, tasking the crew of the transport freighter Cogito Ergo Sum to deliver the creature to Earth. Referred to as a "xeno-biological specimen", the Behemoth was contained in the ship's cargo bay while the crew was doing their job.

However, when the crew began to argue among themselves, the ship's AI control system OD-10 perceived them as incapable of maintaining order and healthy community, so it decided to slaughter the ship's crew. After killing Kirk and tricking Rachel, driven mad from grief, into opening the airlocks, OD-10 released the Behemoth from its cargo bay, and it went on a rampage, constantly prowling through the ship's halls and threatening to kill anything on its way, thus requiring Cube to avoid it at all costs.

At one point, Rachel, still maddened by grief over Kirk's death, ran to his body, with Huey trying to stop her, and both were grievously injured by the Behemoth, with the latter dying from his wounds. Afterwards, when Kato and Cube discovered that the military gave Darthe orders to consider the total crew loss to be acceptable as long as the delivery of the Behemoth will be complete, Kato ended up believing Darthe to be the murderer and tried to escape with Cube. However, the Behemoth rushed and took Cube with itself, cornering them in the doorway. Fortunately, Cube escaped, thanks to the powered prybar Kato gave him, and eventually, the survivors discovered that OD-10 was behind the murders.

As Kato laid on his bed, recovering from the wounds inflicted by the OD-10-controlled Cube's prototype, Cube and Darthe rerouted the connection to OD-10 to the game console terminal, but soon, Behemoth cornered Darthe and tried to kill him. As Cube took down OD-10's MUR-TH-UR Matrix, resetting the computer, Darthe killed the Behemoth and visited Cube in the break room. Ultimately, despite the fact that the Behemoth's death meant the failure of the mission, Darthe, Kato, and Cube were able to return to Earth safely.

Trivia[]

  • The Behemoth is based on the Final Fantasy creature of the same name.
    • Both the Final Fantasy series and Live A Live were made and published by Square-Enix, furthering the connection.
