Belhifet is a powerful devil from the world of Forgotten Realms, and the main villain (as well as the narrator) of the videogames Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear.
History[]
For many centuries, Belhifet had a feud with the Marilith demon Yxunomei and her Yuan-Ti minions. Believing that his personal war could get out of control, the archdevils of Baator banished Belhifet on the world of Toril, in the cold, snowy region of Icewind Dale.
Later, Belhifet started to plot his revenge when he was contacted by the malevolent sentience of the ancient artifact Crenshinibon.
With the influence of the artifact in his mind, Belhifet schemed to create a new infernal army drawn from the Nine Hells of Baator. He planned to re-open a portal to Hell found in Icewind Dale, which had been sealed within the monument of the shaman Jerrod's stone, and secluded away inside the temple of Tempus in Easthaven. Rallying an army of monstrous creatures of the North and shattering the stone would grant Belhifet the army he sought and grant him entrance back home in Avernus.
Disguising himself as a benevolent priest called Brother Poquelin and drew forth followers from a monastery dedicated to the lawful good god Illmater. Warping the minds of his new devotees and turning them into undead minions, Brother Poquelin AKA Belhifet formed his black temple in an abandoned dwarven temple of Berronar Truesilver in Dorn's Deep and used the power of the Crenshinibon to recruit the monstrous army of goblins, orcs and giants needed to conquer the North. While operating from Dorn's Deep, Belhifet quickly discovered that Yxunomei had followed him to Toril after his exile, mustering an army of Yuan-Ti and Lizardfolk in the fortress of Dragon's Eye within the Spine of the World mountains to destroy her arch-nemesis.
Meeting the heroes of Icewind Dale[]
To stop the she-demon Yxunomei, Belhifet used the Creshinibon to summon a blizzard to cover his tracks to the Ten Towns and hired a tribe of Frost Giants to cause an avalanche to kill anyone who would investigate his activities. Unfortunately, Yxunomei's own schemes attracted the attention of the player's characters, the heroes of Icewind Dale, who ventured into her lair in Dragon's Eye and defeated her, sending her back to the Abyss. This led the heroes to discover Belhifet's plot and confronted Brother Poquelin but he managed to steal Jerrod's Stone and used Creshinibon to teleport to Dorn's Keep.
Eventually, the heroes managed to track the devil to Dorn's Keep. Belhifet managed to flee again and, in the process, capture the town of Easthaven in preparation for opening the gate to Baator. Belhifet also used Crenshinibon to seal the temple of Tempus in Cryshal-Tirith. The Heroes managed to penetrate the crystal tower surrounding the temple just as Belhifet opened the portal. Everard sacrificed his life to reseal the portal, and Belhifet was banished to Baator. He would not be able to walk Faerûn again for another hundred years. In his ending narration, Belhifet's voice grows increasingly angry and menacing, stating that he will find a way to make the heroes pay for foiling his plans.
Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear[]
After nearly a century his return to Avernus, Belhifet was provided with a second opportunity to wield his hellish army in the Realms. When the young aasimar Caelar Argent foolishly read along from the Tome of the Nine she inadvertently placed herself under Belhifet's subjugation in Avernus, causing her uncle Aun to offer his own soul in place of hers. When Belhifet appeared to the adult Caelar years later in the Year of the Banner, 1368 DR, and offered her a chance to free her uncle, the paladin from House Argent readily accepted. Caelar appeared before the people of the Sword Coast as the Shining Lady, a charismatic leader that would help them win back the souls of their loved ones lost in the first and second Dragonspear Wars. With guidance from her trusted advisor Hephernaan, the disguised abishai servant of Belhifet, Caelar formed the Shining Crusade, a holy army that marched on Dragonspear Castle and drew the attention of the Bhaalspawn hero Gorion's Ward. Using the god-child's own blood, Caelar opened up the portal to Avernus beneath Dragonspear Castle, giving Belhifet access to the Realms once again.
While Belhifet managed to unchain his horde of devils through the portal on the Sword Coast as he had done over a century earlier in Icewind Dale, Caelar Argent and the company of adventurers led by Gorion's Ward ventured into Avernus and assailed the Basalt Tower itself. Finally confronted within his home plane of existence, Belhifet wielded the entirety of his infernal power against those that dared get in his way. He unleashed his devils upon the intruding mortals and struck them down with hellfire in a great battle on the roof of the Basalt Tower. While Caelar Argent's ultimate fate was unknown, Belhifet was struck down by the heroes in his own domain. Like all devils, once Belhifet was slain within the Nine Hells his last defeat led to final death.
