Bellafrancesca Lobo is the overarching antagonist in the 2023 film Renfield. She is the leader of the Lobos and also the partner of Count Dracula in his plans for world domination.

She is played by actress Shohreh Aghdashloo, who provided the voice of Gozer in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Personality[]

Bellafrancesca is easy-going, typically enjoying her success and is the proud mother of Teddy. She does, however, have her intimidating streak, which makes those around her, even her own son, a bit fearful of her. She can also be charming, as well as well mannered when she needs to be, such as when she was introduced to Dracula. As a mother, she wishes the best for her son, while also looking to see if he is willing to do what must be done in order to get the job done and maintain the level of fear she struck within the city.

Abilities[]

  • Multilingual: It is evident that Bellafrancesca is multilingual, as she is fluent in English, but also is able to speak in French as well.
  • Leadership: As head of the Lobos Empire, Bellafrancesca was shown to be an exceptional leader, both feared and respected by many.
  • Indimidation: While she is respected as a gangster, Bellafrancesca is easily also very intimidating to others, even her to her own son.
  • Stealth: Despite being an older woman, Bela is able to disappear at will. Whether she possessed powers like Teddy however, is unknown.

Biography[]

Background[]

Bellafrancesca is the leader of the Lobos, with her only son Tedward Lobo as her second in command. She built an empire based on fear, while dealing drugs to accumulate a vast amount of wealth and resources, while also corrupting the cops of New Orleans.

Renfield[]

Bellafrancesca is seen in the downstairs of the Lobos' compound, overseeing the torture of either an associate or traitor. She calls for her son, following his release from jail and reminds him that their empire was built on fear, as well as asking Teddy if he is willing to do what must be done to ensure their empire doesn't crumble when he takes over. With that, she orders him to go after Rebecca Quincy, a cop who lost her father to the Lobos sometime before. Following Teddy's first run-in with R.M. Renfield at the restaurant, Teddy returned home and told her what transpired, resulting in her ordering a search for the Familiar. When his hideout is revealed to be a dilapidated charity hospital, she orders her son and several men to the location in order to capture Renfield. It's here that Ronnie, one of Teddy's men calls Bellafrancesca, who answers and asks if it he "butt-dialed" her, only to hear Teddy's frantic voice over the phone as well as him yelling to his assailant that he was Teddy Lobo.

Now worried about her son, Bella finds herself using her connections within the police to find him and is able to nearly get ahold of Renfield, following his capture by Rebecca. After offering the cop a promotion for her capture of Renfield, it seems Rebecca nearly accepts it, only to turn and run off with Renfield in the car. Bela then orders to put an A.P.B. out on them, resulting in a search. A joint force of cops and Lobos find the pair at Renfield's studio apartment, where they witness the familiar's abilities, killing multiple enforcers and cops. Following this, Captain Browning decides to dissolve his relationship with Bela and goes to leave, only for his head to be ripped off and flung into her office. It's here that Teddy reveals himself, leading his mother to ask where he's been and reveals to her that he's been "getting his hands real fucking dirty". He then lowers the steel plates over the windows and has his men bring Dracula into the office, protected by his coffin. It's here that he meets with Bela and forge an alliance with her.

With that, the Lobos kidnap Rebecca's sister and beat her near-death, resulting in Bella telling Rebecca that her sister is with them, leading to a final confrontation. She meets up with Renfield and Rebecca in the lobby of the compound, where she leaves and lets Teddy and several familiars deal with the new arrivals. She returns to her office, but Rebecca is able to slip through the familiars in the lobby and ends up there as well, holding the mobster at gunpoint, demanding to know the location of her sister. Bella, unphased by this, lowers the steel plates in her office and allows Dracula to entertain the cop, while she disappears. After Renfield and Rebecca raise the plates and allow the sun to come in, Dracula turns into a swarm of bats, which escape after the pair, accidentally knocking Bela to the floor. Following Dracula's defeat and the death of her son, Bellafrancesca is finally apprehended by Rebecca and placed in the back of a squad car.
