Villain Overview

Evil is for adults, who steal powerful ancient stones and wreak havoc. And not for tubby little punks who should be at school, learning, taking a recess, sucking his thumb!
~ Belle Bottom dissuading Gru from joining the Vicious 6.

Belle Bottom is the main antagonist of Illumination's 12th feature film, Minions: The Rise of Gru. She is a disco-themed supervillain and the current new leader of The Vicious 6, the worst group of supervillains in the world. She is the former friend turned arch-nemesis of Wild Knuckles.

She is voiced by Taraji P. Henson, who also played Miss Hannigan in Annie and Constance Hatchaway in Muppets Haunted Mansion.

Biography

Belle Bottom was first seen being chased by the Anti-Villain League and made her escape when she reveals she had stolen the map to the Zodiac Stone. Later, after she and the other Vicious 6 members betrayed their leader Wild Knuckles, she took over as the leader of the group.

Sometime after she became the leader of the Vicious 6, she decided to recruit a new member. Gru, who was a big fan of Vicious 6, especially Wild Knuckles, went to be elected but only for Belle to reject him by saying that evil is for adults and not for children, but when Gru stole the Zodiac Stone, he makes a run for it, hoping they will recruit him for his talent. However, Belle decides to kill him instead. Later, after Belle and the gang interrogate the Minions, they learn that Wild Knuckles is alive and has kidnapped Gru in San Francisco.

Belle and the gang reach San Francisco and destroy Wild Knuckles' house when they realized he's not home. Meanwhile, Otto retrieves the Zodiac Stone from Gru after giving it away earlier, but Belle and the Vicious 6 arrived at the Chinese New Year parade and stole it. The Anti-Villain League arrived to apprehend them. but before they can, Belle and the Vicious 6 manage to transform into beasts due to time reaching midnight. Belle transformed into a massive Eastern dragon while getting the upper hand, but Kevin, Stuart and Bob managed to team up with Wild Knuckles and the fight begins. Despite being turned into weaker animals, the Minions manage to fight back by remembering Master Chows' advice find their inner beast from earlier in the film.

Later after Belle manages to burn Wild Knuckles and when she and the other Vicious 6 members were about to kill Gru, the Minions Kevin, Stuart and Bob protected Gru at the last second and altogether used a powerful force shout (what Master Chow used to protect the trio earlier in the film) to repel the villains away and causing the stone to fall off of Belle. Gru was able to get hold of the stone and finally defeats the Vicious 6 by turning them into rats as Belle screams in terror. Gru taunts the Vicious Six how they been defeated by a child and changes his Minions back and rehires them. The Anti-Villain League show up again and arrested them. They were never seen again, thus ending the Vicious Six. Wild Knuckles on the other hand faked his death and enjoyed his life retirement with Gru. The Vicious Six’s headquarters was probably taken down as well since the music shop was officially closed.

Appearance

Belle is a tall and slim African-American woman with her curly hair styled in an afro. She wears a golden choker, hoop earrings, a leopard-printed purple coat with pink fur trim, platform boots, and a purple jumpsuit with a golden chain belt that doubles as a grappling hook with a small disco ball that functions as the hook. She also wears pink eye-shadow and lipstick to complete the look.

Personality

Belle can best be described as rude, sassy, and immoral. She was willing to let Wild Knuckles fall to his death and take his place as the leader of the Vicious 6. She's willing to cause complete chaos and mass destruction to get what she wanted, she even destroyed Wild Knuckles' house. She's also shown to be petty, evidenced by her tying Gru to the hands of a clock to be torn apart even after getting what she wanted. Although she's portrayed in a comedic way, she's just as threatening as the other Despicable Me villains.

Powers and Abilities

  • Dragon Physiology: Her dragon form is by far the largest of any of the Vicious 6's zodiac forms, measuring multiple stories tall at the head in an average standing position on all fours. Kevin is less than one-half the height of her hind-paws even when they're bent and roughly the length of her toes, and goat Bob is only slightly taller than her toes. Her hind feet are comparable in size to a van or small car.
    • Superhuman Strength: As a massive Eastern dragon, the ground shakes under every step of her huge paws. This is only occasionally true for one other member's zodiac form, Stronghold's ox form. She can easily flatten a van by whipping her tail.
    • Superhuman Durability: Attempts to physically damage her are ill-advised. Many rapid shots from AVL's laser guns to her face and neck went completely ignored. She is also much more durable than the other Vicious 6 members: while the enraged Zodiac minions could individually blindside and injure the other members very easily, the three of them combined could only resort to trying to distract the dragon by attacking her paws and eyes. Goat Bob's charge, which was capable of knocking down and Jean-Clawed and Stronghold one after another, only managed to bump her hindpaw slightly. Even then, she could simultaneously shake all of them off with no harm done to her at all.
    • Superhuman Speed: Despite her huge size she can make incredibly swift movements. She moves quickly by snaking her body through the air.
    • Superhuman agility: Her dragon form allows her to climb and cling onto the sides of buildings. Her movements are very quick and graceful, going from a standstill to zooming through the air in a fraction of a second.
    • Fire Breath: As a dragon she was able to breathe fire from her mouth. One blast of fire managed to surround a chinatown marketplace in flames, and a direct blast to Wild Knuckles incapacitated him for the remainder of the fight. The gusts from her breath and convection currents from the heat toppled entire market stands, tables and chairs well before the flames engulfed them.
  • Zodiac Stone powers: With the stone around her neck, she can will the stone's powers onto her enemies and turn them into weaker versions of their zodiac forms.

Quotes

HE TOOK THE STONE!
~ Belle Bottom's most famous quote.
Happy new year!
~ Belle Bottom, before she and her fellow Vicious 6 members transform into animals with the Zodiac Stone.
Why don't we make this a fair fight?
~ The transformed Belle, before transforming Kevin, Stuart, and Bob into animals by using the Zodiac Stone.
DESTROY THE KID!
~ Belle Bottom during the final battle before she and the other Vicious 6 members try to kill Gru.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO…!
~ Belle's last words before she gets turned into a rat with her fellow Vicious 6 members by Gru using the Zodiac Stone.

Trivia

  • Belle Bottom is the second female Illumination villain after Scarlet Overkill from the first Minions film.
  • Belle could be seen as a dark foil to Kevin. They are, according to Gru, both idiots and wannabes who start off as second-in-commands to their respective leaders. Unlike Belle, however, who betrayed and abandoned Wild Knuckles so she could take over the Vicious 6 because she thinks there is no such thing as loyalty, Kevin still remains loyal to Gru because all he and his tribe ever wanted was to serve a master and have a home and a family, which Belle will never learn to have. Had Kevin ditched his tribe, he would've possibly ended up like Belle.
  • In some countries, Belle's name was changed to "Donna Disco" in order to fit better her disco-themed appareance.
