Stop hand

Those people aren't my family. My family died a long time ago.
~ Ben speaking about his relationship with the Umbrella Academy.

Benjamin "Ben" Hargreeves, also known as Number Two, is a major character in the superhero television series The Umbrella Academy, an adaptation of the comic series of the same name. He is one of the 16 super-powered babies born on October 1, 1989, in the Sparrow timeline. He was adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves and became a member of the Sparrow Academy, alongside of his siblings. Due to having been dead in the original timeline, he is the only member of the Umbrella Academy to have been raised by Reginald in both timelines.

He was portrayed by Justin H. Min.

Personality[]

Ben's exclusion from Luther's bachelor party deeply affects him, despite his outward indifference. Sloane, recognizing his true feelings, understands that Ben's facade of nonchalance masks a strong desire for acceptance and belonging. Ben confesses that his identity as a Sparrow is crucial to him because he feels he has nothing else in his life.

As he becomes increasingly intoxicated, Ben reveals his genuine pain and confusion about being left out, comparing himself to the beloved version of Ben from the Umbrella Academy. During the wedding festivities, he gradually lets go of his inhibitions, allowing himself to have fun and dance with his family, eventually earning acceptance from the Umbrellas with Klaus' support.

However, once sober, Ben reverts to his previous self, a change Klaus attributes to a defense mechanism. Ben's behavior suggests he pushes away those who care about him to protect himself from potential emotional pain.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

The boy who would become Ben Hargreeves was born on October 1, 1989, in a subway station in Seoul, South Korea. His mother, a high school student, was one of sixteen (or forty-three in the S1 timeline) women who gave birth that day despite having shown no signs of pregnancy earlier. He, along with six other children from this group, was adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves and raised as a member of the Sparrow Academy, a superhero team.

In 2014, after a falling out with Reginald, Pogo, Reginald's long-time assistant and friend, departed from the Academy. Although the departure was a blow to the Sparrows, Reginald provided them with medication to subdue him. Consequently, Ben and the other Sparrows managed the Sparrow Academy independently for the next five years.

Powers and Abilities[]

Marigold Powers[]

Ben Hargreeves tentacles

Ben releasing his tentacles

Tentacles Generation: Hargreeves can release several tentacles from his back (originally from his stomach). These tentacles are immensely strong, even sufficient to tear apart a full-grown human being. These tentacles could be used as lethal weapons and can retreat into Hargreeves' body without visible indication of ever emerging on his back.

Supernatural Powers[]

Ghost Physiology: In the original timeline, Ben Hargreeves was a ghost with special abilities.

  • Possession: He had the ability to possess other living creatures
  • Invisibility: He cannot be visibly perceived by other human beings.
  • Intangibility: He can pass through anything and everything.
  • Astral Projection: Hargreeves was not here in a natural form, he was a projection of his soul.

Durango Mutation[]

Ben and Jennifer's physiologies were connected in their childhood in the original timeline, which the Umbrella Academy calls the "Jennifer incident" Abigail Hargreeves explains the reaction between the elements marigold and durango (inside their bodies) as "unstoppable", "irrevocable", and "world-ending". Their connection is somewhat telepathic, and their bodies respond with a red, glowing, pulsating rash when one thinks of the other. With this, Ben was able to find where Jennifer was being held captive and rescue her.

More time Ben and Jennifer spend together, more worse the reaction becomes. When Ben's marigold bonded with Jennifer's durango successfully, this resulted in both of them being transformed into a kaiju-monster like. They initially become pulsating blobs, with huge, awkward boils growing out of their skin. Their limbs start extending like tree roots, growing up the walls, with their blood a boiling, glowing red substance spurting from their bodies. More time people fight Ben and Jennifer, the more powerful they become, every bullet or burn, every punch or stab, only helps them to grow up.
