Coach Ben Hopkins is the main character of the 2020 Netflix comedy "Hoops".
He was voiced by Jake Johnson.
Personality[]
Ben is described as a short-tempered, foul-mouthed coach who wants to push his team to success. Fear of getting fired for coaching the continually-losing team, he recruits Matty on the team.
Biography[]
Pilot[]
Ben is first shown raging over unfair shots at a game. In Principal Lowry's office, she tells Ben that if he loses another game (the one that the school board is coming to visit), he will be fired. Left with no other recourse, Ben tries hard to convince Matty into joining the basketball team, much to no avail.
He then recruits a prostitute named Connie into having sex with Matty so that he eventually joins Ben's team. This act gets Connie and Ben arrested.
At the night of the game, Ben gets a suit and tells Opal that if he loses tonight, he is willing to resign. Little does Ben know was that Matty eventually joined the team and is ready to play. Ben's team loses, but he stays as his team made better progress than in the past.
My Two Dads[]
After finding out that Shannon (his wife) is hanging out with another man, Ben jumps to conclusions that Shannon is cheating on him. However, Ben discovers that Barry (Ben's father) was only a mentor, kind of like a second father. Ben kidnaps an old man, not knowing that Shannon's family moved away from the house a few years ago. Ben's replacement father, whom he thought was Shannon's dad, would die.
Ethics[]
Ben goes over the rules of conduct for playing basketball. In order to keep on playing for Lenwood High, all players must maintain a 2.0 GPA. Matty talks with Ben about his Ethics class, because of the midterm on Friday. If Matty does not pass, he cannot play on the team. Matty's teacher Mr. Lonnie Seymour is a tough-to-impress teacher and Ben does whatever he can to get Matty to pass, even if it includes framing Lonnie and pulling pranks on him.
Matty goes on about how the smartest classmate in Ethics class is Andrew Phillips, who is disabled with Advanced Hodgkin's. Ben beats him up.
After a cat and mouse game between the two teachers, Ben's final resort is framing Lonnie of child abduction, which includes some of Ben's teammates. Matty finds this unethical, and to his surprise, Matty passes his midterm, which was a secret test of character. By refusing to go along with Ben's plan, Matty got himself a passing score and can still play basketball.

Death[]
Ben was indirectly responsible for the death of his delivery man Kyle G. What happened was at Coach Singleton's funeral services, Ben ordered take-out to have it delivered at the funeral. While trying to find Ben, Kyle's ponytail caught on fire, causing the fire to spread all over him.
Once Dr. Brooks was hired as the school's grief counselor, Hopkins admits that Kyle's death was for having a ponytail. Brooks tells Hopkins that she is talking to students about the losses of Singleton and Kyle, not about Shannon.
In a flashback, Hopkins was revealed to be the father of Barry Hopkins, a runner-up for the 6th Man of the Year in the American Basketball Association (ABA). Hopkins was influenced by Shannon to swear at singleton. After a series of flasbacks, a student agrees that Ben is an angry man and that Shannon is better off without him.
Later, Ben is painting Shannon's truck as a grand gesture. She demands that Ben signs the divorce papers for once. He refuses, adding that if he does, it is over.
As Dr. Brooks leaves, she ends up getting killed by Ben's new delivery driver. Ben admits he hasn't eaten lunch this lately.
The Road Game[]
Ben oversleeps, causing him to miss his bus to the Cincinatti Invitational Tournament. He calls Ron on the phone about his predicament. However, if Ben hurries, Shannon could offer him a ride to the tournament.
After much bickering, Shannon and Ben pull up to a gas station. The car gets stolen when Ben gets distracted by a person. Shannon is mad at Ben for leaving them out in the rain. After a long walk, they enter a restaurant known as Tinhorn's.
Meanwhile, at the hotel, one of the coaches found out that the stories of Ben being a hothead were false. He is as soft as a teddy bear.
With Ben and Shannon, he explains that he wanted to be taken seriously. Shortly after, he gives Shannon an envelope for her birthday present. It is revealed that it was divorce papers that Ben [finally] signed. Touched, Ben and Shannon go to the back closet to have sex, which is sung in a ballad.
After the tournament was cancelled on account of the team and the cheerleaders getting rashes, Hopkins tells a philharmonic guy to shut up.
The Scout[]
Ben starts the day by telling everybody, even a group of children, that he f*cked his wife. During a game, he runs into Ron, who was dumped by Shannon. Later, he runs into Coach Lamonte from Henderson Prep who is looking at having Matty join his school. In order to prevent Matty from leaving, he hires a prostitute named Connie to pose as Matty's mother. His plan fails when Connie gets goaded into the offer.
After much attempts to get Matty from leaving, Ben would be offered a position at Henderson Prep if Matty goes. He is overjoyed at the deal to the extent that he accepts.
The next day, he holds an emergency assembly to everyone in the school, which is basically him telling everyone to f*ck themselves. Shortly after retiring his jacket, Ben gives a big "f*ck you" to the DAWA, Wendy, a weird religious kid, Kyle G, the Chin Twins (from episode 7), Gunnar, and his father, all while driving and giving the finger.
Before leaving, he is encountered by his old teammates. As gifts, he gives his spare tire, his tools, and auto magazines to the team. The last scene has Hopkins picking up Matty from his house and hitting the road. As they leave Kentucky, they get a flat tire. Ben goes on about how he gave his spare tire to Marcus.
Because of the show's cancellation, it is never known if Matty and Coach Hopkins adapted to their new lives at Henderson Prep.
