Benjamin Hornigold is a supporting antagonist in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. He acts as an ally to Edward Kenway for the first half of the game before joining the Templar Order and becoming a major antagonist of the last half.

Biography[]

Past[]

Prior to meeting Edward Kenway, Benjamin Hornigold was one of the most famous pirates in the West Indies and was friendly with several other notable pirates, namely Edward Thatch and Charles Vane. Hornigold and his flagship the Benjamin would travel around the West Indies, however Hornigold never attacked any British ships. Sometime later, Hornigold was introduced to and befriended Edward Kenway.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag[]

Hornigold, along with his fellow pirates, established a pirate colony in Nassau becoming one of its leaders alongside Thatch, Vane, and James Kidd. When Edward Kenway arrived in Nassau with his new ship the Jackdaw, Hornigold took him out to sea and taught him how to plunder ships, as well as upgrade his own. Hornigold also tried to convince Kenway to leave his wife.

Some time later, Governor Woodes Rogers of the Bahamas offered a pardon to all pirates. The leaders of Nassau were conflicted about what they should do with the pardon. Hornigold was in favor of the pardon, while Thatch was more interested in finding medicines from British ships for the people of Nassau, currently plagued with disease. Hornigold, Thatch, and Kenway formed a new plan, which involved finding medicine from shipwrecks, which would help the people of Nassau and keep their activities under the radar, to avoid suspicion. This approached failed, as Kenway and Thatch found that the shipwrecked medicines were unusable. In addition, Thatch attacked a British Man 'O War, damaging Hornigold's ship.

Kenway and Thatch eventually recovered medicine, however the British had put up a blockade around Nassau in the meantime. Woodes Rogers and Commodore Peter Chamberlaine met with the leaders of Nassau. As a result of this meeting, Hornigold, Josiah Burgess and John Cockram accepted the pardon. Due to this decision, the three of them were branded traitors by their old friends.

Eventually, Hornigold, Burgess, and Cockram joined the Templar Order after some time working for Rogers. In 1719, Hornigold and Rogers met with Grand Master Laureano de Torres y Ayala and learned that Burgess and Cockram have almost located Bartholomew Roberts. During their meeting, Hornigold noticed that Kenway was in the area and called him out. Kenway lashed out at Hornigold for his betrayal while Hornigold wished that Kenway would join their side. The Templars sent their men to attack Kenway, allowing Hornigold, Torres, and Rogers to escape.

Some time later, Hornigold tailed Kenway and Roberts and ended up in a naval battle. Hornigold's ship sustained damage during the battle and was forced to retreat, running aground on an island. Kenway followed, snuck onto the island, and assassinated Hornigold. As he lay dying, Hornigold told Kenway that he wishes he could see the wisdom of the Templars and warned that if continued the path of piracy he'd be killed too.

While Kenway initially took satisfaction in killing Hornigold for his betrayal the latter's words would haunt Kenway for sometime and when he finally became an Assassin he reflected on Hornigold as a friend, despite his betrayal. Before leaving Nassau to meet his daughter for the first time Edward saw a vision of Hornigold, alongside Thatch, Vane, Mary, Rackham and Stede Bonnet smiling at him in approval.

Trivia[]

  • Hornigold's database entry erroneously lists his date of death as 1919, instead of 1719.
  • In real life, Hornigold was incredibly skilled at boarding ships, and this is reflected in-game by him teaching Edward how to board a ship.
  • Historically, Hornigold died when his ship was struck by a hurricane between New Providence and Mexico in an uncharted reef. The location of this reef is still unknown.
