Benjamin J. "Benji" Ashby III is a major antagonist in Season 1 of the Netflix thriller series You.
He is a local playboy, Guinevere Beck's boyfriend, and Joe Goldberg's first on-screen victim.
He was played by Lou Taylor Pucci.
Biography[]
Benji Ashby is the son of Ben Ashby of Ashby Brokerage. After a failed career at modeling and co-creating a dating app, Benji started an artisanal soda brand called Home Soda Artisanal Beverages.
Benji makes his first appearance being berated by Beck, who learned that he cheated on her with a random girl at a party. Benji defends himself, saying he only did so because the girl offered him cocaine. Beck and Benji then proceed to have sex as Beck's stalker, Joe Goldberg, watches. Joe later runs across Benji after meeting Beck and escorting her home.
Joe impersonates a journalist and lures Benji into his bookstore basement with the promise of an article. There, he knocks him out with a hammer and imprisons him in a glass cage.
Upon regaining consciousness, Benji futilely begs Joe to let him go, offering him money. He refuses a bagel from Joe, revealing that he is deathly allergic to gluten, dairy, and peanuts. Benji then recognizes Joe, realizes he's after Beck, and tells him that he can have her. However, Joe refuses to let him out.
Benji becomes increasingly unstable as he remains imprisoned in the glass cage, but eventually admits that he is a fraud and that he has done stuff worse than Joe. He directs Joe to the thumb drive of a video showing him and his fraternity brothers accidentally drowning a pledge (Joe speculates he kept the video to blackmail his friends, presumably into investing in his businesses).
Joe returns to Benji with knowledge of the video and gives him a maple latte, which Benji joyfully accepts and drinks. However, Joe then reveals that he won't let Benji go because he mistreated Beck and reveals that he added two tablespoons of peanut oil to the latte. Benji collapses onto the ground and dies of a severe allergic reaction. Joe later incinerates Benji's body in the woods.
Personality[]
Benji, while not outright abusive towards Beck, is arrogant and apathetic. He dismisses Beck as a golddigger and is willing to let Joe date her.
Trivia[]
- Benji is unable to differentiate his branded soda when Joe forces him into a blind taste test.
