Biography[]
Berlinghoff Rasmussen arrived on the bridge of the Enterprise in a time ship, claiming to be a historian from the 26th century and to be there to witness the Enterprise's latest mission, to Penthara IV to deal with the consequences of an asteroid strike. Captain Picard accepted his story and allowed him the run of the ship, letting him sit in on staff meetings and interview the crew. Rasmussen asked the crew to fill in questionnaires, which focused on technological developments of the past two hundred years. He also made an attempt to charm Doctor Crusher.
Picard called Rasmussen to his ready room to discuss the situation on the planet. Thousands would die without intervention, but the Enterprise's plan carried a risk that everyone on the planet would die if they failed. He asked Rasmussen for his knowledge of the future but Rasmussen refused to get involved, saying that doing so would risk changing his own past. Although dismayed, Picard decided to go ahead with his plan which suceeded.
Rasmussen prepared to depart only to find the Enterprise senior staff at his time ship. Picard explained that a number of items had gone missing from the ship while Rasmussen had been aboard and they wished to search his craft for them. Citing the danger of corrupting the timeline, Rasmussen consented to Lieutenant Commander Data accompanying him aboard, since Data would not reveal anything he saw if ordered. Once on the time ship, Data quickly discovered the items Rasmussen had stolen. However, Rasmussen then held him at gunpoint, revealing he was actually from the 22nd century. He had stumbled across the time ship and its original 26th century owner, and used it to travel into the future. He planned to take the items back to his own time and become rich by pretending to invent them. He now intended to add Data to his collection and attempted to stun him, only for the phaser to fail to operate. Data calmly observed that Rasmussen's palm print would allow him to leave the ship whether Rasmussen was conscious or not.
Data removed Rasmussen and the stolen items from the ship, explaining the situation to the rest of the crew. Picard revealed that once the time ship was open, they automatically deactivated all the stolen items. Rasmussen desperately tried to convince them to let him depart in the time ship only for it to disappear at its preprogrammed time, leaving him stranded. He remained in custody aboard the Enterprise.
