Bertram is a major antagonist in the adult animated series Family Guy.
He is also the main antagonist of the Family Guy Video Game! and the overarching antagonist of its sequel, Family Guy: Back To The Multiverse.
He was the son of a gym teacher and her partner through artificial insemination. Bertram's biological father, through a sperm bank mishap fixing, is Peter Griffin. He is Stewie Griffin's half-brother and arch-nemesis.
He was voiced by Wallace Shawn, who also portrayed Vizzini in The Princess Bride, Dr. Elliot Coleye in My Favorite Martian, Gilbert Huph in The Incredibles and Taotie in Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Bertram is similar to Stewie in that he is a small baby and has a football/rugby-shaped head, but unlike Stewie, he has a small orange perm, smaller eyes and freckles on his cheeks, and also dresses in an orange shirt and purple pants.
Personality[]
Like Stewie, Bertram is also megalomaniacal and dreams of world-domination. However, he is far more sinister in his approach and will resort to any dirty trick. He is also obsessed with defeating Stewie; even when Stewie warned him that preventing him from being born would result in the erasure of the universe, he simply declared "worth it!" and murdered Stewie's ancestor anyway.
History[]
In his debut, "Emission Impossible", Bertram was still a sperm. He entered combat with Stewie Griffin, the youngest son, to prevent his destruction, as Stewie still wanted to be the baby of the family. Here, the two became frenemies, and Stewie would change his mind on a new family member because of this. However, Lois and Peter decide not to have a baby and Peter masturbates in the bathroom, causing Stewie to think Peter killed Bertram. Just as Stewie starts beating up Peter, Bertram shows that he's alive via the twinkle in Peter's eye. Stewie then comes to the realization that Bertram might be too clever.
In "Sibling Rivalry", a mishap prior to Peter's vasectomy landed Bertram in a vial that would later be used to impregnate the gym teacher's partner. After he was born, he started playing at the same park as Stewie, and the two fought over who would be the ruler of the playground. Stewie eventually wins by disarming Bertram and buried him, and it appears that Stewie killed Bertram, but in reality was only planting a tree. Bertram actually admitted defeat and ran away.
He appears again in "The Big Bang Theory" as the main antagonist where he tries to erase Stewie from existence by killing Leonardo da Vinci, one of Stewie's ancestors. Beforehand, Stewie and Brian learned that while passing outside the space-time continuum and overloading one of Stewie's time-travelling return pads to get back, it resulted in the creation of the universe; thus if da Vinci dies, the universe will cease to exist, including Bertram himself. Even when finally learning about this from the two, Bertram doesn't care as long as Stewie's dead and succeeds in killing da Vinci, but he is killed in turn by Stewie when he is shot in the head with his own crossbow. In the end, Stewie manages to maintain the timeline and overall save the universe by impregnating da Vinci's wife with his own DNA.
He appears in "Family Guy Video Game!" as the final boss that Stewie fights. He starts off by tricking Stewie into destroying his own satellite dish by claiming to want it for himself, revealing to have his own plan for world domination before knocking Stewie off the roof with his helicopter. It turns out that he plans to launch a mind control beam into orbit via a rocket. He even put Rupert in the rocket to add insult to injury. When Stewie saves Rupert and destroys the rocket, Bertram uses a device to grow to a massive size in order to kill Stewie at the playground. Once beaten and returned to his normal size, he manages to escape punishment by calling for his mother before giving Stewie the finger.
An alternate reality version of Bertram appears in Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse as the main antagonist, seeking revenge on Stewie and Brian. He attempts to build an army using multiple alternate dimensions and their occupants but is foiled by Stewie and Brian's efforts. In the end, he attempts to kill them with an army of clones and a weaponized Tyrannosaurus rex, only to be defeated once more. He is then finished off when he is fed to his dying dinosaur.
