Elizabeth "Betty" Smith is a major character in the animated sitcom American Dad!. She is the abusive and incestuous mother of the main protagonist Stan Smith, as well as the mother-in-law of Francine, the grandmother of Hayley and Steve, as well as the ex-wife of Roger and the wife of Hercules.
Betty appears as a main character in her episode debut, "Oedipal Panties. She later appears as the overarching antagonist of the episode "Stan's Best Friend", a major character in the episode "American Stepdad", and one of two main antagonists (alongside Jack Smith) of the episode "Blood Crieth Unto Heaven".
She was voiced by Swoosie Kurtz, who also portrayed Judge Hilda Marsden in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Biography[]
Betty had married Jack way before the series and the two later had Stan.
When Stan turned 8 he wanted a clown at his birthday party, but because Betty and Jack weren't financially well-off Jack decided to pose as a clown at Stan's party. However, Jack had used the costume to commit robberies of produce to feed the family, and Stan's police chief hero attended the party and figured out the culprit, forcing Jack to go on the run to avoid arrest. Betty had then divorced Jack and had raised Stan ever since. She abused Stan, making him clingy to her as well as abusing him into thinking what a real man is. It is later revealed that Betty forced Stan to kill his dog, having Stan become mentally attached to any dog and being lost when they died, which turned out for the worse.
Years later Betty had, had many boyfriends but because Stan is so obsessive over his mother, he had kidnapped them all and dropped them off at a disclosed island. However, when Betty marries Hercules Stan becomes even more obsessive, bathing his mother and being sexually obsessive over her, calling her "hot" and even knowing that she has a penis.
Later when Hercules dies, Roger poses as a persona that Betty falls in-love with and later marries. At first, Stan believes that Roger is only trying to get back into his attic, but they bond just as Betty and Roger head to Niagara Falls for a honeymoon. Later, Stan has reason to believe that Roger wants to kill Betty. but when he arrives at the falls to stop him Betty reveals that she planned on killing Roger for the life insurance. When Betty pushes Roger off the cliff, she also slips but Stan grabs both but is unable to actually save both at one time. Roger sacrifices himself to keep Betty alive, and Betty then moves to Paris in France but was actually disappointed when she stops in a cinema to see Fast and the Furious 7 only to discover she missed many of the gay and lesbian sex scenes.
