Those who have been coming to church and taking Communion, they have nothing to fear tonight. As for the rest of them... Let God sort them out.
~ Bev condemning all of Crockett Island to be attacked by vampires.
You disgusting viper! You would burn us in our homes? I knew the day you set foot on this island, of course you would, of course you would. Terrorist. [...] Dirty blood. [...] Surprised you didn't wait until we were all inside, so you could really have your fun. Surprised you made your move when it was empty, coward.
~ Bev's racist remarks after shooting Sheriff Hassan.

Beverly "Bev" Keane is the secondary antagonist of the horror-drama miniseries Midnight Mass.

She is a corrupt and fanatical member of St. Patrick’s Church and the right hand woman of its priest John Pruitt. Viewing Pruitt and the arrival of his mysterious "angel" as a sign of the apocalypse, Bev takes steps to turn the entire town of Crockett Island into vampires, eventually leading to the burning and destruction of the entire town.

She was portrayed by Samantha Sloyan, who also played Tamerlane Usher in The Fall of House Usher.

Personality[]

Bev is a textbook example of a religious fanatic, always quoting passages from the Bible to either defend her points or justify her actions. She has a huge dislike for sinners, such as Joe, the town drunk, and those who are not Christian, like the town sheriff Hassan (who is Muslim). She believes that only those who are Christian are deserving of redemption and is seemingly disgusted by the idea of God loving even sinners. Her fanaticism blinds her to the obvious reality that Father Paul is an unholy vampire, rather than a holy messiah. She was also greedy, unscrupulous and money-oriented.

Bev also has a sadistic streak to her. Because Joe's dog bothered her, she most likely killed it with a poisoned hot dog during a potluck, demonstrating her pettiness. She also orchestrated the burning of Crockett and seemed to relish in it.

Biography[]

Not much is known about Bev's childhood, but it can be assumed that she was not a good person even from the start, which is implied by Annie Flynn. Joe Collie also states that she was not a pleasure to be around when he was young.

When the town was reeling from the effects of a massive oil spill, Bev extracted church donations after convincing the townsfolk to accept a settlement with the oil company in an effort to benefit the church.

When Father Paul Hill arrived at Crockett to replace the ailing Monsignor Pruitt, Bev helps him get accommodated. At one seemingly normal session, Father Paul orders Leeza Scarborough, a disabled girl, to rise and she does, much to everyone's astonishment. Because of this apparent miracle, Bev gives everyone at the local school a Bible, much to Hassan's discontent. He tries to question this at a meeting, but she manages to get the other attendees to side with her.

Sometime later, Bev finds Father Paul in his room at the rectory, which is dark; some time ago, he was preaching when he suddenly coughed up blood, died, and sprang back to life as though nothing happened. He shows Bev that he physically cannot go out into the sunlight because he will burn if he does, and Bev reveals that she had deduced his true identity as a rejuvenated Monsignor Pruitt (she discovered this by comparing "Father Paul" to an image of a young Monsignor on a newspaper and put the two together).

After Pruitt accidentally kills Joe and drinks his blood, Bev, Mayor Scarborough, and handyman Sturge help to cover up the crime. Bev believes that Pruitt's rejuvenation is a sign of the Second Coming, and further elaborates to Riley Flynn that those who have been chosen by God are being given certain abilities to survive the oncoming Apocalypse.

During Easter mass, Pruitt reveals to the townsfolk his identity and reveals to them an "angel", the one responsible for his youth. He explains that he has been giving everyone their blood, which has healing and invincibility properties, in their wine during communion. He then tells them that, in order for them to be "reborn", they must first die. Bev hands everyone rat poison and they all willingly drink it. The townsfolk suffer painful deaths, then rise and begin to attack those who have not drunk it, biting their necks and sucking their blood. Bev, seeing this madness, flees but is caught by a band of individuals who did not drink, Hassan, Leeza, Annie Flynn, and her son Warren, Erin Greene, and Sarah Gunning. Greene shoots her before they flee the church. When Bev recovers five minutes later, she convinces Sturge to allow the townsfolk to run amok throughout Crockett.

Bev pursues the ones who did not drink, later finding and setting on fire the place they're hiding at. Annie confronts Bev and tries to reason with her, but, seeing that this will not happen, kills herself. Bev drinks her blood. Soon after, Sturge points out that the burning house might start a bigger fire, but Bev allows it, citing Biblical passages from Revelation.

The townsfolk, after having attacked whatever unchanged people they could find, gather at the recreational center next to St. Patrick's to take shelter from the sun. Bev points out that one of the individuals is a man who had not attended church and ousts him. Pruitt, having realized the errors of his actions, becomes disgusted with Bev and denounces her; she, in turn, denounces him as a false prophet.

While the townsfolk were still running mad, the ones who had not converted formulated a plan, that they will burn the boats that were intended to be used to transport the townsfolk to the mainland so that they cannot infect the outside world. When they see the burning town, they deduce that St. Patrick's will be the "safe zone" and go there to burn it. When Hassan attempts to douse the rec center with oil he is caught by Bev and is fatally shot by Sturge. Erin Green attempted to burn it but she was then killed by the angel. Hassan’s son Ali, however, is able to burn it down for him after seeing Bev who she truly is, and Sarah burns the church. Disgusted with themselves, the townsfolk depart; Bev tries to find a safe spot to take shelter, but Sturge tells her that there is none.

As dawn approaches, the townsfolk, feeling remorse for what they had done, gather at the town square to sing one last hymn before the sun rises. Bev, on the other hand, goes to the beach and attempts to dig a hole in order to save herself. Before she can do so, however, the sun comes up and she burns to death.

Trivia[]

  • While Bev is more evil than John Pruitt, and she's the one to cause the climax of the story by opening the church's doors, and is ultimately the final threat of the narrative in general, she was merely taking advantage of the situation John had created in the first place. John was the mastermind behind everything, including the poisoning of his own congregation, making him still the true main antagonist in the end.
