Artistic rendering of Bila.
Bila, also spelled Belah, is the personification of the sun in the mythology of the Adnyamathanha people of Australia.
According to legend Bila was a cannibal, the origin of sunlight being the goddess's victims being roasted over a fire. To do this she sent her hounds to drag people back to her lair to be eaten. After an entire tribe were wiped out this way, the heroic lizard men Kudnu and Muda declared war against Bila. Kudnu managed to wound Bila by throwing his boomerang and she attempted to escape by transforming into her sun form and retreating into the cosmos, leaving the world in total darkness. Fortunately Kudnu managed to prevent this by throwing his boomerang, which caught Bila and sent her flying across the sky in a permanent arc around the world. This was the origin of the sun's orbit.
