Billy serves is the main antagonist in the 2023 film The Royal Hotel.
He is the landlord of The Royal Hotel pub and he, like many other men in the town, sexually harass employees Hanna and Liv whilst they are trying to pay off their travelling debts.
He was portrayed by Hugo Weaving, who also played Agent Smith in The Matrix franchise, V in V For Vendetta, Noah the Elder in Happy Feet, Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger, David Melrose in Patrick Melrose and Thaddeus Valentine in Mortal Engines.
Personality[]
Billy is a drunkard. He is misogynistic towards women, including his wife, Carol. He does not know boundaries when it comes to women, or his drinking limits. He frequently gets aggressive when he is drunk, bordering on violent. He also withholds payment for his staff as a means of control.
Billy can be seen as the main enabler of the miner's treatment to women in the town as he often has young girls in desperate situations come work at his bar. He introduces them, and does nothing to stop their advances. He also provides the alcohol to the patrons, a major theme throughout the film. Alcohol is portrayed as the substance that shows the true colours and intentions of men with vulnerable women.
Physical appearance[]
Billy is around his 50s with thinning hair and a thick beard. He is a tall, domineering man and usually dresses casually.
Biography[]
Background[]
At some point, Billy meets Carol and marries her. Either before or after their marriage, they take control of The Royal Hotel, with Billy focusing on office and front of house duties, and Carol focusing on cooking and cleaning. It is unknown when Billy's drinking problem began. It is known that he has hired a string of girls before Liv and Hanna's arrival, who he does not always pay.
The Royal Hotel[]
Billy meets Liv and Hanna on their first day in the town. He patronisingly trains them how to manage the bar, but does not mention quite how busy it gets, and how he will not be behind the bar. That evening, Billy drinks amongst his patrons whilst Liv and Hanna struggle to keep up. He introduces them to the various patrons, such as Matty and Teeth.
One evening when very drunk, Hanna hears her floorboards creaking, and realises it is Billy roaming around outside their door. He slowly approaches her door, which she closes shut, and loiters outside, making Hanna extremely uncomfortable. This is not addressed again. After a day of swimming with Matty, the girls return and witness the strain Carol and Billy's relationship and business is under. Billy had neglected to pay their delivery fees for three months, and had not told Carol either.
After Dolly becomes too drunk and disorderly, Billy kicks him out. This most likely was not for Hanna's benefit, but to not make his other customers uncomfortable. Dolly is allowed back in the bar after this. After a prolonged binge drink, he becomes increasingly aggressive to Carol. In a humiliating state, Billy falls and injures himself badly. Carol takes Billy to hospital, but says that she is leaving him and the town. Carol tells the girls she has left money for them.
