He is voiced by Matthew Gallenstein and modelled by Jack Green.
Biography[]
Background[]
Billy was a miner in the North West mines on the Blackwood mountain, he was married to a woman named Agnes, and had a young daughter, Louise, but he seems to have been having an affair with a woman named Loretta. On the 13th of december 1951, while he was a member of the mine's blasting crew, Billy and 29 other miners were trapped in a cave in.
Trapped, hungry and desperate, Billy and 11 other miners resorted to cannibalism in order to survive, eating the bodies of their fallen colleagues. Eventually, the survivors were rescued on the 5th of January 1952 and sent to the Blackwood sanatorium owned by the owner of the mines, Jefferson Bragg.
However, due to their consumption of human meat, the "Miracle Men", as they were called by the press, began to change, showing inhuman strength and immense agresivity. The doctors of the sanatorium began experimenting and starving them, unbeknownst to Billy, one such doctor was actually a journalist in disguise trying to find information about the miners.
The inpatient[]
Billy is most notably seen by the journalist on the 14th of January, begging Jefferson Bragg for something to eat, with an orderly suggesting to give him something and Bragg refusing to do so. While in his holding cell, he encounters the disguised journalist again and laments about him wanting to see his family before saying that he and the rest of the miners were trapped down in the mines for weeks, and now they're caged in the Sanatorium, before beging for help.
Soon after the journalist was discovered as an imposter by Bragg and the staff and then promptly locked up, brainwashed to forget what he saw. The reporter was then convinced by Bragg that he was a patient in the sanatorium.
Billy encounters the reporter once again as he fights two members of the Sanatorium staff and notices him before beeing dragged away by the staff.
Eventually, Billy and the miners complete their transformation as Wendigos and on the 24th of February all Wendigos escaped and killed most of the sanatorium staff and patient. The reporter, having escaped his cell, meets up with the massacre's survivors and they make a plan to escape the mountain. However, Billy and the other Wendigos try to kill all remaining survivors and the police, having showed up on the scene, are ordered to "silence" every survivors. The survivors have to use underground tunnels to reach a hotel that has a cable car attached to it.
Unfortunatly for the group, both the Wendigos (including Billy) and police follow them here with the former killing the latter. The sanatorium was abandoned and the massacre was covered up, the Wendigos escaping into the mountain.
At some point beetween the 50s and 2015, Jack Fiddler, a Wendigo hunter manage to kill 5 of the miner-Wendigos and captured the rest (including Billy), locking them into the sanatorium's cells.
Until Dawn[]
On the 2nd of February 2015, a group of teenagers, beeing chased by a Wendigo, can find some clues about the 1951 mine incident, including items that belonged to Billy Bates like his mask that can be found in an old shack, a family photo and a post card from his lover that can both be found in the mines.
During the night, one of the teenagers, Mike, accidentally frees a few Wendigos from their cages and when he later returns to the sanatorium he finds a case study documenting Billy Bates' physical changes. Mike noticed Bates had a scar and when he gets attacked by the freed Wendigos he notices one of them has a scar wich leads him to suspect that Bates and the other miners had changed into Wendigos.
Eventually, Mike manages to kill a few Wendigos by blowing up an oil barrel, wich also freed the remaining Wendigos. After beeing stalked and attacked by Billy and the other Wendigos, Mike ends up in a big room with a lot of oil barrels where he is cornered by Billy and another Wendigo.
There, depending on the player's choices, Mike can shoot the barrels, blowing up the sanatorium and severly wounding Billy and later a burnt Billy chases Mike to the mine entrance where he is either shot and killed by Mike or decapitated with a shovel or pipe by Sam, another teenager who met up with Mike.
If Mike doesn't shoot the barrels, Billy will jump on him and Sam later arrives at the sanatorium and finds Billy attacking Mike. Sam then hits him and her and Mike runnaway with Mike sooting the barrels before leaving, instantly killing Billy.
Appearance[]
As a human, Billy looked pale and rather gaunt, with dark eyes and tousled hair. He wore a, possibly linen, shirt, and simple pants with suspenders.
As a Wendigo, Billy has a scar on the top of his head that Mike uses to identify him. Other than that he looks like a regular Wendio, having grey leather like skin, sharp fangs and claws and milky eyes and beeing spider-like in his mouvements. He also has shredded clothes on him, reminiscent of his long lost humanity.
