~ Billy killing Black Noir for what he did to Becky, getting his revenge for her death. |
William J. "Billy" Butcher is the deuteragonist of the highly controversial comic book series The Boys and the main protagonist of I'm Your Pusher, the third episode of The Boys Presents: Diabolical, as well as the overarching protagonist of its sequel spin-off, The Boys: Dear Becky.
He is the snarky and charismatic leader of The Boys, a group of state-sponsored vigilantes who are dedicated to taking down a corrupt superhero faction known as The Seven in many ludicrous ways, thus being the archenemy of both The Team’s leader Homelander and the latter’s clone Black Noir over their connections for the leading death of Butcher’s wife Becca. These events provoked Butcher to the sense of becoming hellbent on eliminating all superheroes on the planet. After focusing on the disbandment of the Seven, Butcher continued his goal to eliminate all supes across the world; this soon involved the majority of his teammates and any legal Supes alike, but in the end, Butcher was eventually stopped by his former best friend and brother-figure, Hughie Campbell, whom he goaded into fatally getting himself killed.
In The Boys Presents: Diabolical, he was voiced by Jason Isaacs, who also played Colonel Mekum in Soldier, William Tavington in The Patriot, Lucius Malfoy and the Basilisk in the Harry Potter film franchise, Captain James Hook in the 2003 Peter Pan film, Zhao in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Ra's al Ghul in Batman: Under the Red Hood, Satan in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, The Grand Inquisitor in Star Wars Rebels, Reza Zaydan in HITMAN, Dr. Heinreich Volmer in A Cure for Wellness, Dracula in Monster Family, Gabriel Lorca in Star Trek: Discovery, SkekSo in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, the titular character in Superman: Red Son, Dick Dastardly in Scoob!, Enver Gortash in Baldur's Gate 3 and Brainiac in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
Appearance[]
Billy is a rather gruff, striking, and charming man of tall stature and toned physique who also looks rather unkempt. His hair is that of a thick, black, greasy tuft on his head, and he also has a prominent beard. Billy is usually seen wearing a dusty and battered black trench coat, usually paired with some kind of patterned shirt. He also wears dark trousers and shoes, and he is often depicted carrying weapons such as crowbars and baseball bats.
Personality[]
Billy is a fairly stoic and calm, but also arrogant and ruthless man who is easily characterized by his immensely charismatic and persuasive nature. He is reasonably friendly to those around him, especially with Hughie, whom he treats like a younger brother figure of sorts. However, he does often push his allies to their boiling points, due to his sheer determination and eagerness to achieve whatever goal he sets out to perform.
Biography[]
William J. Butcher was born in the United Kingdom to Sam and Carol Butcher and had a younger brother named Lenny. Growing up, he and Lenny often overheard their father beating their mother, and Billy grew to despise him. Between his sons, Sam favored Billy, as Sam saw Billy as more like him. One night, after their father beat their mother to the point of knocking her eye out, Billy, consumed with rage, planned to murder him with a kitchen knife, only being stopped after Lenny managed to calm him down.
As an adult, Butcher served in the army for a while but was eventually discharged from it. He later met and fell in love with a young woman named Becky Saunders, who was able to calm him down whenever he experienced violent thoughts. She also helped persuade Billy's mother, Carol, to leave her abusive relationship with Sam.
While Billy was on his honeymoon with Becky, she was raped by a supe, something Billy was unaware of. Nine months later, he awoke to a fetus with laser vision that attacked him, forcing him to beat it to death. He later found out about the rape in her journal. After "Homelander" raped her, Billy became a CIA agent determined to hunt down superheroes.
Because of this horrible event, Butcher decided to create a vigilante group called The Boys to control superheroes by blackmailing and/or beating them. For their last formation, Butcher recruited Hughie Campbell after his girlfriend died of hurried injuries by A-Train.
After the dissolution of The Seven and the death of Homelander, Billy continued to kill supes (including his friends who took Compound V).
When his teammate, Mother's Milk, found out about this, he fought him, trying to stop him. Butcher finally ended the fight, putting a grenade in his mouth. Because of his powers, he survived the explosion but was seriously wounded. Then he finished him, covering his mouth and nose and choking him.
Then Billy planted a bomb at their base. When Frenchie and The Female discovered the bomb, it was too late to defuse it, and then the bomb exploded, killing them both.
After killing his friends, Billy fought his last surviving team member, Hughie, at the top of the Empire State Building. During the fight, they fell to a lower platform; Butcher broke his neck and was paralyzed by falling. Instead of being imprisoned as a paraplegic, he persuaded Hughie to finish him off, falsely claiming that he had already killed his family. Enraged, Hughie pummelled down and finally drove a metal spike into Butcher’s chest. Butcher peacefully bled out and congratulated his friend for bringing an end to all the misery Butcher himself had gone through in his genocidal spree.
