Billy Hopwood is a fictional character and supporting antagonist in the long-running British soap opera Emmerdale. He appeared as a major antagonist from 1997-1999, a minor antagonist in 2003, and supporting anti-hero from 2006 to 2007 up until his departure from the show's 35th anniversary week of episodes.

The character was portrayed by David Crellin.

Biography[]

Billy Hopwood is a mechanic and part-time offender who married Trisia before they concieved a son together - Andy Sugden. Over the next few years, Billy's criminal habits led to him neglecting his family up to the point where Trisia died when Andy was young and their son grew up with a rough childhood until he was adopted by farmer Jack Sugden and his wife Sarah.

In 1998, Billy sought to reconcile with Andy despite opposition from Jack. At first Billy managed to successfully bond with Andy, but later got involved in an armed robbery on Christmas Day 1998 that led to him killing shopkeeper Vic Windsor in the process. Billy attempted to get Andy to help cover his whereabouts from the authorities, but Andy ultimately exposed his location and Billy was arrested before getting taken to prison.

In 2003, Billy summoned Andy to inform him that he has a half-brother named Daz Eden. This led to Andy and Dan bonding with each other for the next few years. In 2006, Billy was parolled for his release and he walked out of prison a free man. He remained in contact with Andy and his family throughout most of 2007 until he infuriated Jack by having an affair with his new wife Diane Sugden. Later on when Jack's daughter Victoria confronted Billy for his behaviour, Billy retaliated by telling Victoria how Jack covered up the fact that Andy was to blame for causing the death of Sarah - her late mother - in the past and was also partially the reason why her brother Robert Sugden went on the run from the police.

The next day, Billy rescued Jack from a fire after the latter helped his children escape the burning house. The building then exploded and Billy was injured, but he recovered after being rushed to hospital. He later decided that Daz was better off with Jack and Andy before deciding to leave the village without telling him.
