~ Billy Leotardo before murdering Lorraine Calluzzo. |
William "Billy" Leotardo is a major antagonist in the fifth season of the HBO Television Series The Sopranos.
He is the brother of Phil Leotardo, both of whom are high-ranking members in the New York City Italian-American Lupertazzi Crime Family. While not as sadistic as Phil, Billy is still a horrible person who commits various unforgivable crimes throughout his appearance on the show.
He was portrayed by Chris Caldovino.
Biography[]
Background[]
William Leotardo was born in September of 1960 to an unnamed mother and Francis Leotardo. He was also the younger brother of Phillip, both of whom were born in New York City. The two quickly became partners in crime and joined the Lupertazzi Crime Family where they gained a reputation for being cruel and powerful. When Phil got arrested in 1984 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, Billy took care of his wife and grandchildren. He was also an avid Yankees fan and also sold computer printer toner cartridges out of the back of a truck.
Season 5[]
After the death of Carmine Lupertazzi, the Don of the Lupertazzi Family, the rest of the syndicate was split into supporting either Carmine's son, Little Carmine or family underboss, Johnny Sacrimoni, with both Billy and Phil (who was released from prison in 2004) supporting Johnny Sack. Billy and Lupertazzi protégé and associate Joey Peeps were eventually sent to murder Lupertazzi shylock Lorrain Calluzzo and her partner, Jason Evanina after first warning them after they tried to extort Dan, the owner of a bar in Manhattan. This was also a means to provoke Little Carmine, as Lorraine was an ex-fling of his.
Billy, however, is most prominent in the season when he is carrying out business with Phil, with the two being seen when they visit the Esplanade Construction Site to greet a group of soldiers in the New Jersey DiMeo Crime Family. Billy is also seen attending the funeral of Joey Peeps, who was, unbeknownst to anyone, murdered by Tony Blundetto, the cousin of DiMeo Family boss Tony Soprano (who was ordered to kill Joey by Rusty Millio and Angelo Garepe, who were a part of Little Carmine's crew). While being mostly a hitman for the family, Billy also worked as a cleaner for Johnny Sack's social club, where he "did a good job" at, according to Johnny. As revenge for Joey's death, Johnny Sack puts a hit on Angelo and sends Phil and Billy to do so, and in true Leotardo fashion, the two commit the murder in the most torturing and unnecessary way possible. The two first confront him, then garrote him into the trunk of their car before shooting him twice in the face, killing him instantly.
After hearing the news from consigliere Silvio Dante, Tony Soprano freaks out, knowing that Tony B and Angelo were close friends in prison and tries to get into contact with him, but fails. Days later, Tony hears from his nephew and protégé Christopher Moltisanti wakes him up with the news that Tony B had murdered Billy. It is then revealed that after hearing the news about Angelo's death, Tony B ambushed Billy and Phil after they left the Averna Social Club, where Tony B shot Billy dead and injured Phil, leaving Phil to hold his dying brother in his arms and swear for revenge.
