Wilhelm Schnell, AKA Billy Midnight, is a minor antagonist in Red Dead Redemption 2, appearing in the mission "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman". He is a former gunslinger tracked down by the player (either Arthur Morgan or John Marston depending on at what point the player accepts the mission) for information about Jim "Boy" Calloway.
He is voiced by Tommy Buck.
Billy, born Wilhelm Schnell, worked as rifle cleaner for the famous gunslinger Rabbit Matthews. During this time he met the outlaw Jim Calloway, who was an incompetent, drunken coward despite his in-game heroic reputation (much like Billy). Billy eventually gained national celebrity by killing Matthews (although he actually killed him in his sleep and told everyone it was in a duel), giving speaking tours about it and regularly re-enacting Matthew's killing. He received many death threats and eventually became a recluse after several attempts on his life.
If the player accepts the mission "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman", they are given the names of four outlaws - Billy, Emmet Granger, Black Belle and Flaco Hernández - to track down and interview about Jim Calloway for his biography. Billy can be found at Rhodes Station in Lemoyne, where the station clerk tells the player that he is usually drinking in the bar carriage. When the player approaches Billy to talk to him, he wrongly believes that the player is there to kill him and begs him to let him go, insisting that he didn't kill Matthews in his sleep, and if he did it was the only way.
Billy runs away through the train and is chased by the player. Eventually Billy climbs on top of one of the carriages and is cornered by the player. Unable to escape, he drops down on one knee and challenges the player to a duel. He will then attempt to shoot the player, who must shoot him dead. Upon killing Billy the player is to photograph his corpse to bring back to Calloway's biographer, who credits Calloway with killing Billy.
- If the player attempts to defeat Billy non-lethally by shooting his gun out of his hand, he will laugh maniacally before producing another gun and committing suicide.
- It is possible for the player to avoid the duel entirely by not following Billy onto the carriage roof, in which case he will eventually shoot himself without duelling the player.
- It is also possible for the player to shoot Billy dead before he initiates the duel.
