Is there a tomato can in the house!?
~ Billy the Kid

Billy the Kid, also known as "The Hungry Goat", is a one-time villain from the Fleischer Studios cartoon series Popeye the Sailor Man, only appearing in the episode "'Hungry Goat". He is a pesky, fourth-wall-breaking goat that eats food and other objects (mostly metallic) that belong to other people.

He was voiced by the late Gilbert Mack.

Biography[]

In "The Hungry Goat", Billy the Kid went waltzing by singing a song. When he noticed that the title of the episode he was in was called "The Hungry Goat", he immediately started feeling extremely hungry. Billy crawled the ground in starvation, looking around for some food to eat when he came across a pile of tin cans only for these tin cans to be taken away by a crane that sent them into a truck for a scrap metal drive.

Depressed over the fact that he lost all of his food to a scrap metal drive, Billy the Kid decided to kill himself by ramming his head into a metal boat. His suicide attempt failed as his bones were stronger than the metal but then he noticed that this metal boat was a goldmine for food.

Billy the Kid boarded the ship and propped open a trap door with a broom and set a cannon and a bunch of cannonballs on top. Then he went over to a metal bucket of water that Popeye was mopping with. Billy the Kid ate the metal bucket, leaving behind a solidified blob of water. Popeye ranted at Billy the Kid for taking his bucket but then Billy the Kid gave the water to Popeye only for it to splatter all over his hands. Enraged, Popeye chased after Billy the Kid and landed right in his trap and got crushed by a cannon and a bunch of cannonballs.

Billy the Kid went inside of the boat and started eating some forks and knives. He later ate the chain for an anchor and later, Billy the Kid ate some dive bombs.

While Billy the Kid ate some dive bombs, Popeye stuck his hands out of a foghorn and tried to smack Billy the Kid with a mallet only for Billy the Kid to turn it around and face it toward Admiral Kurry so that Kurry would get tricked into thinking Popeye was trying to sabotage him. Admiral Kurry thanked Billy the Kid for saving him and then punished Popeye by making him swab the decks. After this, Admiral Kurry left the ship to go to the movies. Billy the Kid mocked and ridiculed Popeye for his stupidity and then Popeye started chasing him with the mallet. When Popeye finally caught up with Billy the Kid, Billy the Kid told Popeye that Admiral Kurry was probably watching them at the movie theater right now. Admiral Kurry was shown in the audience for the movies, watching what was going on. Popeye saluted him, allowing Billy the Kid to smack him with a mallet.

Popeye chased Billy the Kid around the boat, while some kids watched in the movie theater, asking themselves why Popeye didn't just beat up the stupid goat. Billy the Kid tricked Popeye into running off the ledge of the boat so that he would fall and land on an airport. One of the planes activated and carried Popeye through the sky. During this, a sign came up, summoning Admiral Kurry to come back to the ship for duty. Admiral Kurry came back to the boat to see that Billy the Kid had eaten everything. Kurry was mad and just about ready to let him have it. However, he was unable to find him. Billy the Kid appeared in the audience of the movies, now watching Popeye and Kurry suffer from his destruction of their ship on-screen without himself getting punished.

Trivia[]

  • His name is not only a reference to the famous cowboy, Billy the Kid, but also a pun on the fact that he's a "billy" goat and his youth makes him a "kid".
