~ Binky rants about his insecurities to other clowns. |
Binky the Clown is the main antagonist of the 1991 dark comedy film Shakes the Clown.
He was played by Tom Kenny, who also played Uncle Howee in The Haunting Hour, Dr. Fen from Kim Possible, the Dirty Bubble in Spongebob Squarepants, the Chritchellites in Samurai Jack and Stuck Chuck in Kid Cosmic.
Biography[]
In the fictional town of Palukaville, Binky is awarded the coveted job as the clown host of the Big Time Cartoon Circus, a popular children's television program. Binky gets the job instead of Shakes, a good natured yet alcoholic clown who has been dreaming of hosting his own show. Binky is frequently seen hanging out at the Twisted Balloon, the clown bar owned by Owen Cheese, who is also Binky and Shakes's boss.
Shakes is finally fired because his drinking has ruined another party and flies into a rage, threatening to kill Cheese before passing out in the back room. Binky goes into a storage room with his clown friends Boots and HoHo, as well as a couple of rodeo clowns named Ty and Randi, to sell them cocaine. Cheese, looking for Shakes to apologize and offer his job back, discovers the deal. Concerned that the discovery could cost him the coveted job as the host of the show, Binky panics and beats Cheese to death in a rage with one of Shakes's juggling clubs. Binky uses some quick thinking to make it look like Shakes had killed Cheese. Binky then makes a phony 911 call while pretending to be Cheese, that implicates Shakes in the crime.
Shakes is forced to go into hiding until he can clear his name. Shakes, along with his friends Dink and Stenchy, go on a recon mission to the local rodeo clown bar, the Broken Saddle, where they learn that Binky was the one who killed Cheese. The rodeo clowns are arrested for their part in the cover up, and Shakes confronts Boots and HoHo, who actually shoot Shakes to prevent Binky from being exposed. Fortunately, Shakes survives the bullet, which is lodged in his flask instead. Meanwhile, Binky attempts to seduce Shakes's ex-girlfriend, Judy, and during his awkward attempts at flirting, accidentally admits that he was the one who murdered Cheese, not Shakes.
To hide this information, Binky kidnaps Judy and dresses her up like a clown so he can pretend she is part of the show. Binky straps Judy to a board and attempts to kill her live on the air with throwing knives to make it look like an accident. However, Shakes, Dink and Stenchy arrive at the studio and fight Binky just in time to save Judy. Binky is later arrested for his crimes, with the police telling him that he will probably end up in a mental institution. As Binky is carried away, he rants to Shakes that he does not regret anything he has done. After this, Judy gets back together with Shakes and he gives up drinking. With Binky incarcerated, Shakes becomes the new host of the show.
Personality[]
“ | You piss me off. You know why you piss me off? 'Hi, Shakes. Could I get you another beer, Shakes, freshen it up? Maybe some Corn Nuts, Shakes? Shakes, Shakes, Shakes, Shakes...' But there were times when I needed a little service too, BABE! You just weren't interested, were ya, doll... face? What about me? What about Binky? What about MY NEEDS? What about my needs as a THIRSTY... AND HORNY CLOWN?!? | „ |
~ Binky rants about his sexual frustrations to Judy while attempting to kill her. |
Binky is easily the most unhinged character in the film, if not one of the most unhinged clowns ever seen on film. Binky is a children's entertainer but does not seem to like children at all, to the point where he was willing to murder a woman in front of a live studio audience comprised entirely of kids, and on his first episode as host, no less. Binky is an egotistical and hedonistic psychopath, who cares only for himself, frequently doing cocaine in public and making advances on Shakes's girlfriend, Judy, despite her not wanting such attention. Binky's most telling personality trait is perhaps his neurosis, as he is constantly nervous, jittery and paranoid (though it could be argued this is because of the cocaine).
Despite being arrogant, Binky seems to hate himself and is convinced that nobody around him likes him either, though this was probably correct. Binky is vengeful and bitter about how the other clowns do not like him. He is especially envious of Shakes, who has the affection of Judy. Binky only had two friends, Boots and HoHo, who were also clowns. They agreed with everything Binky said and laughed at all of his jokes because they were afraid of him. Binky was a threat, as he flew off the handle and murdered his own boss because he caught Binky selling and doing cocaine with two rodeo clowns. Binky was clever enough to quickly figure out how to cover up the crime by framing Shakes, as he had used Shakes's juggling club and Shakes had earlier threatened to kill Cheese in a drunken rage over being fired. However, Binky was incompetent enough to accidentally admit that he was the killer to Judy.
