~ Bio-Terrorist |
The Bio-Terrorist is an Antagonist of the On the Brink expansion of the board game Pandemic. He supplements the game's four main diseases with his own purple virus. In the Expansion, he is the main obstacle to the Scientists' (players') goal to cure the main diseases because he can destroy research stations and proliferate his own vile concoction.
He is a silent and reserved antagonist, making unknown movements between player turns and having vague ways of alerting the Scientists to his presence. Often, he will be found at an airport, but it is inconclusive whether he was arriving or departing. His effervescence is his power - while he is physically weak and easily apprehended by the Scientists, the fact he could be anywhere on Earth means that the Players will have to divide their efforts between the main goal of curing illness and tracking him down.
Appearance[]
The Bio-Terrorist wears an orange biohazard-jumpsuit mix and a rust colored gas mask, obscuring his face and full body. Much of this outfit is practical, as the Bio-Terrorist manages a dangerous disease, rivaling the four that made for a global challenge in the base game. It is also meant to be a frightening and mysterious outfit; the Bio-Terrorist relies on stealth and fear to avoid arrest and confuse the Scientists.
Powers and Abilities[]
Despite his diminutive frame, the Bio-Terrorist has the profound power to seed global collapse and the end of the World. He acts alone and has the unique ability to appear anywhere silently and rapidly sow chaos, often through infrastructural destruction. He acts after each player's turn, allowing him to perform far more actions in comparison to an individual Scientist. As a result, the Terrorist, even if discovered and captured, can almost immediately escape to an unoccupied city and begin proliferating his vile virus. Therein lies his most damaging ability - as an action, he can add a cube[1] of his own purple disease to the map, possibly causing an outbreak of both his virus and the one endemic to the city where it occurs.
Personality[]
The Bio-Terrorist is a quiet individual, but as with any unhinged or quasi-supernatural foe (for example the Joker), has an inherently cartoonish side. Depending on the style of play, a Bio-Terrorist player may be cold, silent, and effective, destroying key infrastructure and distracting the Scientists, or more proactive, stalking a single Scientist and immediately removing any research stations that they manage to build. Optionally, instead of simply announcing a sighting or remote infection, the Bio-Terrorist player can tell a short story about how the news is broken, perhaps a shaky video is posted showing him leaving an airport, or a call from HQ that he was discovered within the rubble of a research station moments after a detonation.
