Hey, Wake, why don't you humor Dr. Hartman and give writing a shot, huh?
~ Nurse Birch to Alan Wake
You get TWO PILLS IN THE MORNING and then you'll be nice and calm... all day long.
~ Taken Birch.

Nurse Birch is a supporting antagonist in the 2010 horror videogame Alan Wake and its 2021 remake, the first installment of the Alan Wake franchise.

He is the nurse at Cauldron Lake Lodge, who "helps" deal with unruly patients, under the direction of Dr. Emil Hartman, as well as, the complicit in the actions of his boss and helps her by keeping Alan Wake in his psychiatrist.

He was voiced by Andrew Totolos.

History[]

A day earlier, Dr. Hartman contacted Barry Wheeler, Wake's literary agent, and told him that his client had been taken to the shelter. But in reality, this was a trap, so that Wheeler would be captured by Birch, along with another assistant, and locked in an office in the institution's personnel wing.

When the writer Alan Wake woke up in the Cauldron Lake Logde, Birch accompanied Dr. Hartman in case Wake reacted violently during the tour of the Lodge before the psychologist left him with Wake in his "care" during a storm. unnatural was beginning to form over Lake Cauldron. Shortly afterward, while keeping an eye on the writer, Nurse Sinclair called Birch to help her restrain the Anderson brothers, who were attempting to cause a distraction to give Wake a chance to escape from her. Much to the surprise of the moment, Thor's plastic hammer somehow turned into a real one and knocked Sinclair unconscious, forcing Birch to hide in a nearby storage closet, while the brothers mocked him.

Shortly after The Dark Presence has begun to take over the psychiatric hospital. Nurse Birch was inevitably engulfed by his influence and had become a Taken. When Alan Wake tried to escape from the lodge, through the hedge maze, Birch (now transformed in Taken) tried to kill him, along with a flock of possessed birds, but the writer managed to kill him so quickly and managed to escape from there.

Trivia[]

  • Although he considers himself as an antagonistic bully who supports Hartman just for doing his job, in reality he is aware of his terrible actions against patients and helps him at all costs, no matter the damage it does, proving that Birch, like his boss, was already a bad and corrupt person at the Cauldron Lake Lodge, before becoming another Taken by the Dark Presence.
